xc70awd 2004 attempting timing belt replacement
I followed a link to this site in the hopes of finding the Holy Grail to changing this belt any info would be greatly appreciated

Beware that your car may have different specs than what you find in those threads. Engines are all the same -- inline-5 -- but parts and part #s may be different. Hopefully MIJ will chime in. I think he's done his P2 (2001+ Volvo) timing belt.

Thank you all for the replies the almost non existent marks on the cam pullies was really messing me up. I've determinded that they are in fact the marks beacuse they come so close to the notches in the top cover of the plastic timing belt cover. May have to wait for daylight to find that little mark behind the crank pulley. One question left that I have is does the tensioner for the serpentine belt have a spring preload on it or do I take off the damper pulley to remove the belt.

The main difference with your engine compared to others (posted with links above) is that yours has CVVT (constant variable valve timing), so to make sure it's set right BEFORE you take your belt off, it's essential that after you line the marks up to the cover, you turn the belt another 1/4 turn clockwise and then back counterclockwise until the timing marks are spot on. the CVVT engine seems to allow the cams earlier engines, so be careful that nothing moves while you slightly loosen the center screw to the tensioner and then hold it while turning the 6mm allen head screw counter clockwise to the 10:00 position to loosen the belt enough to take it off. Installation should be fairly easy by starting the belt at the crankshaft, then the idler pulley, intake cam, the exhaust cam, water pump then finally the tensioner. Put the timing cover back on and make sure the marks all correspond, then while holding the center screw on the tensioner, use the 6mm allen head screw again to adjust the tensioner depending on the ambient temperature...then tighten the center screw. I guess that's about all. If you need the procedure in detail from VADIS, I think I can dig it up... Let me know.

Thank you for that reply...just for kicks the timing belt tensioner in it's present position IS in the 10:00 o'clock position according to the diagrams I've seen that would be ok for like -5% or am i missing something there is no sign of any leaking should i just re-adjust it when the new belt is in or replace it. what i mean to say is did I just get lucky that I did this now? the tensioner in that position is really loose right?

Depends on where you live- you should be in that position for -5F...otherwise, yes, I would say that it's loose. The #1 reason for belt failure for your car is that mechanical tensioner failing. Many people believe the old-style automatic or hydraulic tensioner actually lasts longer (we replace it at 140K miles at the 2nd TB change... where change interval for the belt was 70K miles). It is imperative that you change that tensioner, even if there are no visible signs of leaks or issues. I am adding the VADIS instructions for Timing Component change here for you:

Thanks agian for the info I'm attaching photos note the the position of the indicator on the tensioner. I really didn't need to use the 6mm hex to loosen the belt I was able to just slide it off the tensioner. After a little cleaning I was able to make out the punch mark in the crank gear

Right...way to loose if you could just slide the belt off- you're very lucky that you didn't have a timing belt destruct on you while driving before now....very lucky!

I really want to thank you all agian. It went smooth as silk and the old girl is purring like a kitten. I'm actually looking forward to the next belt change. Now on to the rt headlight bulb change anything trick to swapping the old out for the new besides not touching the glass without white gloves and not having the light on? The car is equipped with bi Xenon headlights. What is the high voltage warning for? Does it apply if the car is off and lights are off? I mean is there some sort of capacitive discharge to watch out for in the dormant circut? Thanks in advance
