Just recently my 740 radio will get a lot of static and will more and more often just have no signal on FM stations. It still gets AM and the cassette works, so I am assuming it is a problem with the antenna connection. Does that sound about right? I can sometimes smack the dash and the FM station will come back in, so the problem lies somewhere in the dash.
How do I access the back of the radio and what should I look for as the connector to the antenna? I did see the old post about the color codings for an '86 740 radio and I think the antenna lead is red.
Thanks for your help!
740 Radio no longer receiving FM stations Topic is solved
Yes, it could be the antenna!
Solution 1.
You have to take ashtray out including the holder, so you can see the fuses. Loosen the square plastic frame away around the cigarette lighter. You will now find two screews, loosen them. Then you can take the whole shelf out including cigarette lighter. After that it is possible to get acess to the rear of the radio. You can feel but not see! The radio itself is placed in a plastic box, and that box is partly open in the back for the wires to enter.
Solution 2:
You have to loosen the frame around the radio and take the radio out. You try to loosen the two clips normally holding the radio, those clips are placed at right and left side, aproximately one inch behind the front. If you don't have special tools for this, it could work if you slide in a thin plates at both sides of the radio, sometimes you can use a screew driver and bend a little. The you can slide out the radio.
Solution 3.
If you have any possibility to get access above radio when loosening the plastic frame around the radio, you will find a screew in the back of the radio assemly box. With a long screewdriver you can loosen that screew and slid out the complete box including the radio (but you still have to make solution 1).
The red wire is for power feeding, the antenna wire is the absolute thickest one, usually grey or black and a special connection, because it is a shielded cable.
Any way, if it is not some bad connection, you will still need to take the radio out in order to install a new one. If you need colour code, please come back, and I will try to help you if you specify the model of 740. Good luck!
