manual transmission--difficulty shifting

New clutch and used gear box installed about a year ago. Recently it has been difficult to shift into first gear. Car has 157,000 miles.
It is a 1991 240 DL. Transmission people say it is a clutch problem; mechanic who installed clutch say it is a transmission problem.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

If the clutch is cable operated, as some 240s are, check the cable adjustment. There should be free play of approx 1/8" before the cable starts to pull the release lever.

If it is a hydraulic system try engaging 2nd gear and then 1st. If it engages easier then you may be starting with synchro problems. That technique helps the synchros to engage. It also works with the cable clutch.
