All Wheel Drive isn't working

Post by maryjojp »

I have a 2000 V70 with the all weather package, last week I noticed a high pitch whistle, I took it into my local mechanic thinking it was the break warning system but he said the all wheel drive was not working on the rear tires? Any suggestions? The car has approximately 98,000 and just had a full volvo service.

My suggestion? Get a second opinion. How could he know it isn't working? Normally the car supplies its power to the front wheels. Only when they start to slip does it start to power the rear wheels. Maybe he doesn't know that.

Its a completely mechanical system - no sensors to fail. I don't see how it could not be working unless parts have been removed.
2011 XC70 T6 - current
2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Q2 - Totaled in 2022. Not my fault.
2011 XC60 - sold
2000 V70XC - given to a friend, wish I still had it.
