s60 2001emissions problem 14%co failed

Post by mykemac »

emission system service required, engine check light ,coming up,has failed emissions test badly,p0171 and p1171 are the two codes coming up on my scanner,i have already fitted a new maf and second hand front o2 sensor lately and i also cleaned out the trottle module which solved its eratic jumpy performance,in short its driving well, bit heavy on juice, where should i look to get rid of faults for good and reduce emissions?

When were the spark plugs and air cleaner last changed?

Do they check for unburned hydrocarbons up there? If so, what was the reading?

Is there a law against using oxygenating agents in the fuel?

Seems to me your mixture is slightly rich. Maybe you need new Oxygen Sensors. Hopefully someone has a code list and can tell us what they mean.

If it's not illegal in your area you can go to the drugstore and buy a couple quarts of rubbing alcohol. Get at least 70% alcohol (80% is better). Drive til your tank is almost empty. Add the alcohol to your fuel tank and drive a few miles, then go directly to the smog test station. After the test go immediately to the gas station and fill your tank with fuel. The alcohol adds oxygen to the mixture, burns up the unburned HC and reduces the CO. I've seen it work several times. This is now banned in a lot of places so if it's illegal where you are, don't do it.

thanks for your prompt replys, have the code info-P1171 means long term fuel trim upper limit,P1132 means front o2 sensor HO2S signal too high,i find over here that most of small time mechanics have a "change the o2 sensor"or other related component maf for instance but id rather become more knowledgeable regarding reading live data to suss out problem as i have a scanner(memoscan)it will delete the codes and give me limited live data, there's probably better ones on the market id say that i could hook to my labtop,im like a dog with a bone here tryin to solve this rather than go to the dealer as im thinking of limiting any future trips to dealer to minimum appreciate any other comments you may have, thanks again

Since your code scanner is saying the O2 sensor is out of spec I'd try changing that first.
