mykemac wrote:thanks for your prompt replys, have the code info-P1171 means long term fuel trim upper limit,P1132 means front o2 sensor HO2S signal too high,i find over here that most of small time mechanics have a "change the o2 sensor"or other related component maf for instance but id rather become more knowledgeable regarding reading live data to suss out problem as i have a scanner(memoscan)it will delete the codes and give me limited live data, there's probably better ones on the market id say that i could hook to my labtop,im like a dog with a bone here tryin to solve this rather than go to the dealer as im thinking of limiting any future trips to dealer to minimum appreciate any other comments you may have, thanks again
The standard preps for smog inspection are:

1a. Use highest octane gas available. It burns slower/cooler so it produces less NOx. For smog I use 100 octane unleaded "racing gas".

1b. If legal in your area mix 4 parts gas (above) with 1 part ethanol (available at hardware stores). I wouldn't use 70% rubbing alcohol. It has 30% water in it. If you want to use isopropal alcohol use "Heet" available at Walmart and other fine establishments. It's 100% anhydrous isopropal alcohol.

2. Have a fresh oil change. Use 50 weight oil. It seals the rings better reducing blowby.

3. Make sure your air filter is clean/unrestricted.

4. Unplug the clutch of your A/C compressor. You don't want it accidently coming on during the test.

5. Make sure your cat is HOT! Drive for a half hour before your smog test.

6. I've heard of people actually unplugging a fuel injector for the test (it dumps fresh air into the exhaust, thereby diluting it.) This is sure to light your MIL on an OBDII car causing you to fail the test.

i will try a few more tests on the car to see what i find, just thinkin,14.4% is a hell of alot of co poison, exit from exaust to touch is black,so think id like to get it down to close .5% or so,'cause if i get it pass the test i will probably not get chance to rectify source of fault and it may cause further problems elsewhere as i have read about cats failing if problem is not rectified, appreciate your post bruce

[quote="mykemac"] i also cleaned out the trottle module which solved its eratic jumpy performance,
You probably can find some carburetor cleaner in aerosol. So do a treatment through the throttle body to get rid of the carbon build up, on top of the other suggestions here. Twelve thou on the air cleaner, may warrant a new air cleaner.

thanks Sony for reply, put back in the old o2 sensor today(im a sucker for punishment!or maybe just dont want to buy new sensor till im 100% sure i need one)anyway brought to garage afterwards to check emissions, zero co,hc ok,-so my predicament now is that my car will pass the emissions test on the old sensor but on a too lean mixture from old sensor and poor car performance jumpy ,response on scanner(0.03v little fluctuation) is poor with regard to dc voltage output from sensor(yellow and black wire),just have to bite the bullet i think and purchase new sensor if i want better response idsay what ya think? :| :o :?

think i got to the bottom of emissions problem mentioned above on s60,since i fitted the second hand o2 sensor although car seemed to drive well was totally out regarding emissions (see above), then i thought maybe the second hand sensor was from a different car thus different calabration resistor-86ohm and 112ohm!(on plug end)stripped the second hand plug off, fitted the the original plug and short term and long term trims look normal,no more than 15% STFT 0% LTFT and it drives nicely, volts moving up and down .1 to .9 v 7 or 8 times every 10seconds rough guess while looking at scanner, will bring car to garage for pretest for emissions tomorrow and let you know,im hopeful!thanks to all who helped and responded with info and tips much appreciated

past nct test no problem thus that cal resistor on the end plug of o2 sensor is specific to engine size and type so i presume once you strip and connect the sensor to original plug it should work always provided o2 sensor that is being fitted is good.I would amagine universal one or aftermarket part may not work as well maybe, anyways im sorted which is good
