S70... 1998...How Much can be Dropped w/Engine Cradle?

Post by jarnkm »

car has Turbo & A/T, bad headgasket & L.Fr Susp. Damage from hitting a curb. This part was welded w/no attempted cradle straightening where lower control arm attaches. I have a great deal on an impounded S70 almost identical and lower mileage. I plan to drop motor, tranny, lower control arms and drive axles as a unit, IF POSSIBLE. Depending on visible condition, I might consider DCing nuts retaining struts and drop everything, less the wheels. They usual price me similar to a nearby Pull-A Part yard. Heck, I might get the "outer" front clip, if it's good, as well ... original is going to need "some work".
QUESTION: Have any of you pulled a "drop" like this or have a link to something similiar?? Having 45 yrs of foreign car repair under my belt and being 66 and disabled [NO, it isn't mentally ... I don't think] I'm still wirey enough to give it a go. After all, the SBC in the 245 Wagon came out OK!!
Thanks in advance.....
IF it ain't broke........don't fix it!!!!!

I know I have seen it done on other cars, so I don't see why it wouldn't work on the Volvo. I think other than the struts, you would just disconnect everything like you would in a normal engine swap, except you leave the engine/trans and steering/suspension components bolted to the cradle.

I am also pretty sure that this how some junkyards will dismantle the cars, just pretty much cut the cradle out and the whole assembly falls out.
