1990 740 auto transmission service

Post by 740volvoguy »

Went to local independent Volvo shop to service auto transmission. The fluid had been flushed and replaced a year ago but it is now due for new filter (and new fluid) according the maintenance schedule. Was told no need to change the filter as it was cleaned by the reverse flow of the flush. In effect, a permanent filter. Any comments? I hadn't heard of this and can't find anything on the net about it.

Thanks in advance for any info provided.

Welcome to MVS

As long as the transmission on your car is an AW-7x series, (it may be the same for the ZF transmissions, but I am not certain) then it is equipped with a strainer, not a filter in the traditional sense, so the strainer does not really get "clogged" as far as I know. When you take the transmission pan off, you can inspect the strainer and if there is anything stuck in it, you can carefully take the obstruction out. Given that, I wouldn't worry about the filter unless you're dropping the pan anyway for a cleaning (which I believe is part of the service schedule; I'd have done it already if it weren't for that darn filler tube nut). If I remember correctly, fluid should be changed every 20,000 miles per the service schedule.

Thanks Darrell, it is AW-7x series. They didn't take the pan off, just said it didn't have to be done because of the flush. I do a lot of miles and I tend to do these services ahead of schedule. Will have the pan off for a look.
