Re: The ETM letter to owners

My s60 t5 2001 is at the dealer in Ponce, Puerto Rico (Trebol Motors) with an ETM problem diagnostic. They are trying to charge me more than $2,000.00 for the repair, and at this moment, I simply don't have that money. I've read about the extended warranty but I have not been able to find a valid document to show them that they should not charge me for the repair.

I will deeply appreciate if someone can help me. My e-mail is [email protected] and my 24/7 phone number is (787)464-1088.

Please help me!!

My 2nd unit is failing. I got the ETM light this morning. No limp mode yet but I need to address this now.

The car still has less than 200K miles on it. Will volvo replace this 2nd unit for free like they did the first one?

If, within 10 years or 200,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the date your vehicle was originally placed into service and zero miles, your vehicle exhibits any of the conditions mentioned above regarding the Electronic Throttle System function

I doubt there are any cars with the poor design/ built ETM fitted that still qualify by now as Volvo stopped using the POS over 11 years ago and the extended cover is only for ten years OR 200,000 miles whichever comes first - There won't be any left on the road younger than ten years with this part fitted - Mike

2002 s80 turbo, 88,000 miles
Recently purchased from close friend who really took care of the car.
Cara went into limp mode on first tank of gas.
ETM error messages found and I took car to Volvo dealer.
Looking for alternatives to high repair costs.
Volvo says out of warranty and that throttle body was previously replaced in SC under warranty for previous and original owner. So, owner had replaced a second time in SC.
I think rebates are in order, maybe two! Car kept at second home in SC by previous owner.
I spoke to Xemod..They say they no longer make a unit for this model because they are now made in China. Any advice, comments or thoughts appreciated. I should not have to pay for a third TB. Thanks.

buy another factory unit maybe? The first one should have lasted the mileage the car currently has. If they put a repalcement on and the car only has 88k on it then I question whether or not they ACTUALLY got it replaced or if the 2nd one was defective. I beleive a factory warranty still applies to actual parts.

A 2002 turbo S80 should have a Bosch ETA not a Magnetti Marelli ETM. Your VIN number PMed to me would help and I can help you narrow the choice of replacement down. XeModex may well have been talking about Bosch ETA as Magnetti Marelli units are still refurbished and/or manufactured in Italy.

Could you snap a pic of the side of the throttle and post it up please?

Re: 2002 s80 turbo
Thanks for the help.

Let me clarify. A new TB was put on in 2010 by a Volvo dealer in Myrtle Beach. About $600 paid. I have the receipt from previous owner. No warranty involved.
The TB was replaced again in 2012 or so by a non Volvo mechanic. Worked but only 2500 miles put on car until it failed again in late 2014..
Volvo dealer here in WV says TB is not for s80. Maybe off a newer s40. Only 90 day warranty.
Doubt picture would help much.
