240 DL - 1987 - Two belts have been shredded and fallen off

Post by Sean-o »

Hi,

My 1987 240 DL has 150,000 kms and a new engine with 10,000 kms on it. Recently the A/C compressor belt and one of the Alternator belts were shredded and fell off. I am looking for some tips to figuring out what the problem is here, and possibly some guidance with fixing the problem myself.

I know that some more infomation may be helpful, anyone with questions, please feel free to ask!

thanks

sean

It could be that one of the belts failed and interfered with the other one, causing it to come off also.

If you grab each pulley by hand and can turn it without a lot of resistance, it was probably just a belt failure and you can just put new belts on. If one of the pulleys is frozen, you have found your problem. The only one that you shouldn't be able to turn by hand is the crankshaft pulley.

Thanks for the reply!

All of the pulleys do turn, so I guess I will replace the belts and see what happens.

Do you know what size of belt is required for the A/C compressor?

Also, should the vehicle start without these belts present? (The car has been in the driveway for four months, perhaps the battery is just depleted...?)

Thanks again
Sean

I don't know what size the belt is, but your local auto parts store should be able to tell you.

The engine should start without the belts on, but don't run it for long as the water pump won't be turning.
