1995 850 front hub life

Post by steelbuddha »

I'm replacing a bunch of rubber parts (engine and subframe mounts, strut components, etc.), axles, seals, and anything else needed under my 1995 850 Turbo sedan, which has 196K miles on it. What's the expected useful life of the front hubs on this vehicle? This seems like a good time to replace them, but they haven't given me any trouble and my budget was blown to smithereens some time ago.

Is it worth replacing the hubs now? The car has been run in the southeastern US for its entire life, has been well cared for, and has never been exposed to road salt. The hubs appear to be sound and aren't causing any problems right now. I don't know if they can be expected to last the life of the car, or if they're considered a maintenance R&R item.

Opinions much appreciated!

I personally don't replace hubs until they start to go...if there is no noise out of them, count your blessings and keep going- there are probably more pertinent things on your car that need attention.

Thank you. I talked with the guys at IPD and they said essentially the same thing -- until the hubs start howling, let 'em be. I have a tendency to go overboard when replacing parts; the "might as well" syndrome. Maybe overkill, but it does seem to cut down on the roadside repairs.

When I get done with the work on the 850T, it'll be the closest thing to a new car I'll probably ever have again. That's pretty satisfying.
