Power Steering Flush - Red - Green! Help!

Post by velorider »

Love the forum! Greatest source of information to solve almost every problem you'll ever come across.

About 10K miles ago a message about power steering level low appeared. I checked the manual and it said ATF, so I topped it off and found the lower hose was leaking. The hose had a screw clamp so I tightened it a little.

This week browsing threads I ran across one the said in 1999+ Volvo changed to CHF-11S fluid but didn't fix the manual till 2004. Yikes! I called the dealer and they confirmed the fluid for 2002 S60 2.4T.

After more reading, everything seems to confirm this and confirm that ATF and CHF-11s do not play nice together. Crap!

Off to the dealer to buy the correct fluid. Ouch! I followed the directions posted by MadeInJapan, except rather then ATF I used the Volvo power steering fluid.

I noticed during the flush the fluid was more red then I would have excepted from what I had topped it off with. Oh No! A little more thinking I remembered some post about the hose clamps being some kind of spring clamp. Maybe the PO had the power steering leak described in a TNN fixed. I continued with the flush until the fluid exiting was a nice green.

So now I am little worried. The old fluid was pretty red, not green. I'm fairly certain the correct fluid is the CHF-11S. But thought I would reach out to the community to help ease my nerves.

1. Is CHF-11S the correct fuild for the S60 2002 2.4T?

2. Any reason the old fluid was so red?

3. Would flushing with the CHF-11S, resolved any problems that might arise with mixing ATF and CHF-11S?

3. Should I just chill, drink a beer and just want and see?

Thanks
John

Don't know what the spec number is, but the Volvo power steering fluid for the P2 cars (yours included) is green... What more can you do? Just replace as much of the red as possible until it is all green and go from there- drink a beer and chill.. I would just wait and hopefully nothing happens.
