2001 s60 cel & enviroment panel troubles

Post by witsue »

and trying to get an inspection sticker, but can't seem to get the CEL fixed. Took to Autozone, codes 456, 441,& 455. They recommend new gas cap, that did not work, though the cap did seem defective. I took it to a volvo mechanic, and he replaced an evap hose, still the cel came back on. The inspection shows O2 sensor ready, O2 sensor heater monitor ready, would this mean the O2 sensors are OK? The quick answer a dealr gave me was new catalytic converter, and a very expensive quote, is there any sure way to tell if the converter is bad? Car runs fine, no problems at all, up hill, no misfires, idles great, really can't afford new CC, and out of time for failed inpection sticker.

also, I diconnected the black cable from the battery, and could not get the red cable disconnected so I put the black cable back on. to my surprise, this caused my entire enviroment panel to shut down. Dealer says, needs to come in to determine what is wrong, and maybe codes reset. Is there any other way to reset the panel

Did you have the key in the II position when you reconnected the negative battery cable? Here's what you do: disconnect the negative battery cable with the key off. Wait 10 minutes. Turn the key to the II position, then reconnect the battery cable taking care not to enter the vehicle until the SRS (airbag) light has gone off [signifying a completed self-test]. Does your environment panel work properly now?

The key was not in the ignition at all. Though I may have turned the car on then off before the airbag light went out, maybe that did it? Putting the key in the ingition while connecting the battery is safe? :|

You are suppose to put the key in and at position II when you reconnect the battery cable. Otherwise you can get an SRS light (which has to be reset by the dealer  )

Not only is it safe, it's required for some of the computer systems aboard this car to initialize properly!

The procedure (which is found in the Volvo manual -- VADIS and VIDA) is also quite safe--a fault in the SRS will not cause you harm, if an airbag were to deploy when reconnecting the battery, as there will be no one in the car when the key is in the II position (which energizes the SRS circuitry and self-tests it). If you were to reconnect with the key in 0, and there was a fault in the SRS, you could be injured when you turned the key to II and a bag deployed.

Ok, I finally just tried disconnecting the negative, waiting 10 minutes, and reconnecting the battery with the key in postion 2, it did not reset the enviroment panel... Does this mean I have to have a Volvo dealer look at it? They seem to quickly say it may need a new circut, as oppose to just down loading some software, which sounds expensive.

Since you reconnected the battery (first time) incorrectly, your car is barking back at you... Yes, you may be in for a trip to the dealer. Sorry.

I have always (up until now) reconnected my battery cable with the key out of the ignition switch. I've never had a problem, so I'm not sure that mitsue has messed anything up by doing that.

According to iEquus, the P0441 code is: Generic Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow

So maybe your purge valve is bad. I'm pretty sure that's cheaper than a new CAT.

Can you get to a shop that can reset the codes and see if any come back up?

Good call on the purge valve but he says his ECC control panel is out now after hooking up the battery (with key out). Unless it's just the bulbs (strange this would happen suddenly) and the ECC works otherwise.... I don't know how to trouble shoot this without the dealer's help- hopefully the dealer is an honest one.
