Hi all, I'm quite active on the dutch Volvo forums, but registered here because of the knowledge on ETM related problems. Hope you guys can help me.
My wife drove home from work when our 2001 S60 had hesitations. She disengaged the cruise control and had no power at all and had to stop on the side of the highway. Road side assistance came and did a readout. This showed the following codes:
- P0123 Throttle Body Position Sensor A - no signal or short to V+
- P2101 Throttle Actuator Position Performance
The mechanic started the car and it seemed normal. My wife drove behind the mechanic home, but within minutes the car went into limp mode again and the mechanic had to tow her home.
I connected my DiCE and did a readout:
- ECM620A - Idle too high
- ECM903F - Throttle position sensor - missing signal
- ECM9150 - Throttle position TP sensor 1 - invalid signal
- ECM980F Airflow - wrong air flow
I have the famous Magneti Marelli Throttle Body (8644345) with white sticker.
Long story short I suspected the sensor and ordered a Sacer hall sensor from ebay. Followed the whole procedure and also did the calibration to come to a 1.35V half closed.
After fitment I started the car and waited for it to return to normal idle. Everything seemed ok, but after about 5 minutes going at 60km/h in second gear there where two small hesitations and the car went into limp mode again. Got home in 3rd with 2000rpm. Parked and it dropped through idle and started to run really uneven. Almost as on 3 cilinders or so.
I connected DiCE again, but no error codes.
A few days later, lots of hours on the internet, I wanted to go for a drive to trigger more codes. On contact I immediately got the Motor management error. I connected DiCE again and got the following error:
- ECM-9150 Throttle Position TP Sensor 1 - invalid signal
I started the car and went into communication mode and plotted the values from the ETM.
The car ran normal and gasresponse seemed ok. Both sensors showed almost the same values. However not the same values, which I find strange as I did the sacer mod where sensor 2 is bypassed.
After about 5 minutes suddenly the idle changed into a really rough sort of bonking again. And it showed the following values:
ETM - Throttle Body position sensor 1 29.61 degrees
ETM - Throttle Body position sensor 2 29.45 degrees
ETM - intake Throttle, desired position 2.68%
ETM - Absolute Throttle Position 105.64%
ETM - Accelerator peddle PWM signal 7.41%
ECM - Accelerator peddle analog 7.80%
ECM - Accelerator peddle pwm 7.40%
The ETM Absolute Throttle Position is way off. Also the Intake Throttle desired position is too low I think.
Where does the Absolute Throttle Position value come from? Is it calculated by the ETM? If so, then I probably did the sacer mod for nothing, and have to change the ETM completely right?
2001 S60 with ETM? troubles
I kept doubting the cause. What if I replace the ETM and it does not fix it. I can keep throwing new parts at it and in the end still have to go to a shop. And when you read enough forums there are always stories where the part was replaced, but the cause was something different.
So I called the shop I goto for the APK (mandatory yearly safety checkup for cars older than 3 years) and explained the symptoms and asked them what their course of action would be. He said first do a readout and 80% sure its the ETM.
As a last check I also called a friend of my dads, who was a teacher for engine technicians and he also recommended replacing the ETM.
So I contacted a Volvo scrap yard for an ETM with white sticker and the same parts number. 108 euros including shipping.
The next day it arrived. I cleaned it and put it in.
The car started ok. 1500 rpm settling to 800/900 rpm. After 5 minutes I took it for a drive and it drove great.
Problem solved!
So great to experience the comfort and premium audio after driving the old Mitsubishi Spacestar from my wife parents.

Thanks Fostar82
The ETM unit was changed in about 2006 to a final, better version
You often need to load software when you use a scrapyard (junk yard, breakers, or Pick and Pull) ETM = glad you did not!
You can find out when your ETM was built by looking at the date code on the sticker
Format is YYYY "W" WW so 20006W15 is the 15th week of year 2006, for example

You say, "I have the famous Magneti Marelli Throttle Body (8644345) with white sticker", therefore, you are limited, unless after 2006 TB is same as 2001 - else email XMODEX for their expert opinion.
