I don't think the software is the problem. The software is probably doing all it can to make your ETM last, but eventually it will fail anyway.

I would complain about the dealer jerking you around by not telling you what the diagnostics said and having you come back multiple times for more work. The national office might get on the dealer and make them do right by you.

I think your symptoms qualify as a malfunctioning ETM based on this quote from the Trew, et al web page info:

"Your ETM may not be functioning properly if your “check engine light” or other driver warning messages illuminate, if you notice uneven engine idling . . ."

If you call the ETM number listed on that page and complain, they may help you to get a new one through your dealer. The problem is that time is running out on the warranty, if it hasn't already. It needs to be addressed asap.

You also might want to read through this forum, it's only about the ETM problems everyone has been having. You could contact Don Wilson directly and ask for his opinion: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... m.php?f=12

Long term fuel trim can also be a MAF that's what it was on my car. If you have a MAF pull it off and clean it using the special MAF spray they have at autozone/advanced auto parts. Careful to not touch the spray hose to the sensor itself or you will damage it, and let it dry at least an hour or so to make sure it is completely dry. Then plug it back in, go to autozone/advanced auto parts and have them just clear/delete the codes.

See if it comes back or gets better.

I can't believe you've spent $800 at the dealer on this. All dealers aren't bad however mine is actually really really good.

I would drive the car personally until it gets bad enough before replacing anything because you could replace the ETM and have it be the MAF and replace the MAF and have it be the ETM. They are both expensive.

Thanks for all the encouragement. Tomorrow, I'll call the dealer and try and get the other codes from them and cancel my Tues appointment. Then I'm calling North American headquarters and complain. Is there a good probability that once the MAF is fixed that the check engine light will come back on? Somehow, I still wonder if the software upgrade was botched.

I guess I still need to replace the MAF and where should I buy it? Auto Zone sells it for $150.00 but, I can get a $30 refund. Their vendor is Cardone. Are they any good. Should I use a Volvo part? Can someone provide me with a detailed step by step process? If it is a 10 minute job, I figure if I can get it done in an 1 hr, that will be good. I went out on the web looking for a free service manual that I could use, but I couldn't find a source. Is there such a beast available?

Reading everything about the ETM made me nauseous, especially the $800 -1200 figure. I'm not sure I can tackle that one. But first the MAF sensor.

Thanks again.

Unfortunately for the MAF sensor, you really need to buy the Bosch equivalent for your Volvo- no others work right. Try eeuroparts.com and www.fcpgroton.com or a dealer. You can also try calling Darel Waltrip Volvo in Tennessee and ask for Don or Jamie and tell them you're on this forum- they offer a great discount even w/ shipping and you know you're getting the right part.

The service manager called this am. He was looking at my file and sees all the trouble occurred when I received the software upgrade. He wants to send someone up here (I live an 1 hr outside the city) give me a loaner and take my car back. They want to re-trace everything that has occurred since the software. He feels the service technician mis-diagnosised the problem and he will refund me any monies due and fix it. I must say I am totally shocked. I'll keep everyone posted. Thank you so much. This forum got me through the weekend.

I've tried to ask more intelligent questions, thanks to this forum. This is what I was told. With the upgraded software, the MAF sensor can now better measure the amount of air flow. Because the MAF wasn't up to standard, I received a check engine light. Does this sound reasonable?

I guess anything is possible...but still sounds a bit fishy.
Get them to give you the codes- they owe you at least that- you're the paying customer. Tell them that other dealers print them out for the customer. If/When you get them, post them up.
