Engine Malfunction Light - Of Course

Post by MikeS70 »

Can I turn this off? Every place I call to reset will not without a diagnostic. The cheapest one was the dealer and they wanted $120. I do not want to pay anything just to turn this light off.

Reset Volvo 850 XC70 S70 V70 C70 S80 Service Light

850 (1993-1995)
There are two diagnostic units(it says A and B on the cover) located adjacent to washer reservoir under the hood.

1. Turn on the ignition and open the module A and insert the flylead into socket 7.
2. Press the button on the diagnostic unit 4 times, briefly but firmly.

Then the LED illuminates and stays illuminated, and the system is ready to accept manual code input. A code number for resetting the service reminder light is 1-5-1.

3. To do this, press the test button once and release it. And LED illuminates again.
4. Then press 5 times and wait for the LED to illuminate.
5. Press the button once and LED should flashes several times in succession and the reminder should have been reset.
6. Switch off the ignition and replace the flylead in its holder and close the cover.

I take it from your user name that you have an S70. If you are referring to the check engine light, PepBoys or AutoZone will pull the codes and turn it off for free. Otherwise, you can buy a code reader for about $100-$150 and do the same thing yourself as often as you need to. Best to fix the problem while you are at it, or it may cost a lot more down the road.

You need to find a new dealer! Even my dealer only charges like a $10 "service fee" to turn off service and check engine lights.

I got my 1997 S70T5 chipped tuned up to 272 on the engine and 204 hp at the wheel. But the second light from the bottom left is on now. he green Lambda sign on orange. I did go to the service and checked it. It says "fault on the ECU". We cleared it and after 15 minutes later back on again. It is also off for a while if the battery is disconnected for some 10 minutes but back on in the same way. The mechanic says it is because the overboost (18 PSI between 4000-4400 rpm) the ecu. is not reading right. And it always smell rich mix.
Help me out people, I like beating STI's, EVO 8's or 286 PS M 3's, that I don't wanna go back to normal.

Most important question what code do they read. another response was have it shut off by a parts store. In massachusetts they will read the code but laws prohibit them from reseting the light. Of course they will go on to say "disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes" If the light returns you should look into replacing the faulty part.

Harbor Freight (use Google) has regular sales on a "simplistic" ODBII reader that will reset any fault codes for the ODBII. I was able to pick mine up for $39 with free shipping. With my 96 850 it flashes leds that must be counted to get the code. It works fine on my 99 Ford 150, 05 Lexus ES, and my neighbors 96 Honda; it displays the P number correctly.

It should. It is a generic ODB II. I havent found one yet that it does not work to some degree on.

It runs through 4 cycles of displaying the code before it resets it. I have had a few 111 codes be the only display with the check engine light. As a backup I have had Pep Boys read the codes - they will not reset. The Harbor Freight will reset all coes after displaying them 4 times.

This car is very sencitive when it comes to the engine light and refulling. Trust me next time you go to the pump MAKE SURE TO TAKE THE KEY OUT OF THE EGNITION, AND THEN MAKE SURE YOUR FUEL CAP IS TIGHT AND IT CLICKS A FEW TIMES.
