I bought a 1998 940 non turbo wagon for my son with about 200,000 miles on it. Before I got it on the road I had my local Volvo mechanic go over it pretty closely. I was having some transmission issues as it was making a high pitched whining sound and was not shifting properly. He flushed and changed transmission fluid and installed a screen kit. It ran fine for about a month or so. Now it seems to be making the sound again and not shifting as smoothly. Its another $100.00 bucks to diagnose the problem at the Volvo shop......any suggestions? Could it be a relay switch or something simple or does it sound like the transmission is on its last ride?
Thanks for your comments!

Have you checked the fluid level?

Bill,
Yes. Fluid level is fine. I had my local Volvo mechanic put in a new screen kit for the auto transmission and had the fluid replaced. I did have a radiator issue I am wondering if perhaps some antifreeze co mixed with the auto tran fluid.....probably a long shot. I am going to have my mechanic clean screen or replace and change tran fluid again. Making I high pitched whining sound and slipping. Wish I had the knowledge to do myself. Any comments from anyone else out there?? Thanks Rob Cushman

Hi Pizza,
If the filter on the transmission does get clogged it "could" cause the pump on the trans to make a high pitch whine. But the big question at that point is why would it be clogged again after only a month. There is no source of contaiminants in an automatic transmission except wear. The screen should be sufficiant to filter that.
I would suggest you have it looked at again. Take a look at what is in the pan. But it sounds to me like it may be close to the end.
BTW, water or antifreeze contamination makes the fluid look like milkshake. Strawberry if the fluid is clean, chocolate if it's bad
good luck.

Tiki,
Tiki, Thank you very much for your reply I really appreciate it. I took it to Portland Volvo today and your absolutely correct in your diagnosis.......a new transmission is in order. I found one for $300.00 and its got approx 150,000 miles on it.(1995 Volvo 940 Wagon) I have an engineering friend who is a brain and cant wait to get his hands greasy.......any pitfalls I should be aware of ? I think its pretty straight forward just time consuming. Whats my best reference book or manual? If you have any PDF files etc I would love to have.....anyone out there......? Thanks again I apprecite you taking the time. If I knew how to manipulate these smiley faces I would probably add a very sad face because I really did not expect a blown transmission on this ......... Regards, Rob Cushman
