Power Steering Fluid 2002 S60 AWD 190K kms

Post by kdaide »

My power steering reservoir is low and I need to top it up. I purchased BARDAHL Synthentic Power Steering Fluid with Sealer and Conditioner. The bottle says that it is compatible with all power steering fluids and that it meets or exceeds all European and Asian manufacturer specifications.

Is there any problem mixing the synthetic power steering fluid with the existing OEM fluid still in the system?

Thanks, Kevin

My advice and this is from a non-professional is do not mix it. Here is what I know from personal experience. The manual says the power steering fluid is ATF, i.e. automatic transmission fluid, which is red in color. However, if you ask the dealer for P/S fluid he'll sell you a mineral based fluid, http://www.thepartsbin.com/catalog/?N=1 ... 63286+7177 that is green in color. I don't know whether this mineral based fluid is normal formulated power steering fluid and compatible with off-the-shelf P/S fluid and additives. So unless someone can confirm this for you I would not mix them.

I am always leary of mixing PS fluid- I would stick with what the dealer sells you and it will be slightly green in color.

I wouldn't mix the fluids. The green stuff is Pentosin S11 of F11. Rather expensive and difficult to find, but FCP Groton carries it, but you won't find it on their web sight, but just call and ask. They have about the best price unless you find a local source to spare the shipping!

You will also need to find why you are low and fix it. After you pay the price for the Pentosin, you'll be more motivated!
