Post by KirkE »

How do I flush the radiator fluid on my V70? I can't locate the drain plug.

The drain plug is up under the driver's side...right under the radiator- you'll see the plastic covering and a round hole it it...straight up from it is a petcock that takes an allen wrench...just undo it and put a bucket under it. A lot will drain out...After it is drained, I put the petcock back (be careful as it is plastic and will break if tightened too much) and add distilled water and run the engine and drain until it is clear....then drain again and add the coolant and then water again (using only Volvo coolant, but there are opinions on this- that you can use other coolant as long as they are ethylene glycol with no phosphates)..... remember that your system will take almost 2 gallons of fluid total...so you'll use most of a gallon jug of coolant plus the distilled water. The distilled water is cheap in gallon jugs from the grocery store.

Thanks so much!!

Is there any benefit to a mix stronger than 50/50?

Read the side of the bottle the coolant comes in- it will tell you what ratio of mixture does what. In really cold or really hot climates, people do mix 60/40 for instance, or even more, but there is a limit as to what the coolant is capable of handling...and too much coolant vs. water at some point doesn't really help. Hope this answers your questions...if you live in a normal climate, 50/50 is definitely the way to go.
