!998 V70 crank case pressurizing

Post by cfrank »

I've got a 1998 V70 turbo, 168K miles that the cank case is pressurizing, and smoking. I've replaced the breather hose from the intake hose to the breather box(including the vaccum lines) replaced the box ( including attaching hoses, also the one from the cam carrier) I've blown air into the cam carrier opening, both crank case openings, vaccum nipple on the end of the intake runner, all free. Swapped out the oil cap with one of my other Volvos. I'm at a loss. If I leave the hose off the top of the cam carrier it won't pressurize, and quits smoking....but it will blow oil all over above idle. I don't believe the turbo is pressurizing it as at idle it doesn't generate much, if any boost.
It's obivously not breathing, but I can't see why not. What am I missing?

Welcome to MVS. I'm having the same issue with a '94 850 (non-turbo) and after replacing everything and cleaning all openings and even blowing through them (all clear), it's still pressurized. The only logical solution is that the rings in the pistons are shot and allowing blow-by- but I have not yet done a pressure test for each piston....but seems logical to be the next step for both you and I.

It might be worth a try to dump 1/3 of a can of Seafoam into the oil. Jim (JRL) reported a substantial increase and evening of compression when he tried it. If compression increases blow-by will decrease.

Thanks for the suggestion, Lee...I'll have to give that a try to see if compression improves and positive crankcase pressure decreases.

What would be the procedure for this?? I assume you run the car for X time, and then change the oil. As seafoam is not readily available in Canada, would any combustion chamber cleaner do the trick (ie; Cleens from GM)?

I think I've seen the GM cleaner mentioned before, people say it's good too.

With SeaFoam you put 1/3 in fuel, 1/3 in oil and 1/3 through a vacuum line to the engine. You do all this right before your next oil change. If you put it in the crankcase (oil) you don't want to have it there for too long, so then you change your oil shortly thereafter.

OK, I'm really befuddled now. I appreciate the input. I went out and did a compression test, 1) 160 PSIG,2)155 PSIG, 3) 150 PSIG, 4)160 PSIG, 5)150PSIG.

Per the Volvo pocket data book, spec's say 1.1 to 1.3 MPA, with .2MPA max difference, 150PSIG is approx 1.03MPA, and 160 PSIG is 1.1 MPA a bit low, but not horrible. I'm sure would come up if I got it warm before testing.The car hasn't run in 3 months, other than testing.

I'll give the seafoam a try and see what happens, can't hurt.

All;

Sorry this is so late, but I did get the problem fixed, seems it was the "high dollar" intake hose. ( the 1 part I hadn't replaced :oops: ). The vacum pick up port in that had plugged solid, I thought it was still open.

BTW did try the Seafoam, didn't help that problem but worked wonders on my motorcycle!!hanks much for the tip

Which hose exactly? I can't figure out a smoking dipstick on mine and all the pieces have been replaced as well.
