A/C airflow vacuum motor failure??? '96 960

Post by irbyjr »

A/C airflow reduced significantly when accelerating or hill climbing. Vacuum motors were replaced years ago but failed again. New motors are costly. Can the airflow regulator doors( ) be blocked open easily? Can this harm anything? If not, how to easily get to the doors??
Thanks a bunch,
Irby

Maybe you have a vacuum leak somewhere else. When is the last time the vacuum hoses were replaced?

I don't think that the vacuum hoses have ever been replaced unless the dealer did that when replacing the vacuum motor years ago. I'll try to check them out.
Thanks

It's usually the floor/defrost vacuum servo ("bellow" I think is the proper name) that fails. If you remove the cover under the dash, you can see it right above the gas pedal.

Most likely, it's the yellow vacuum connection that has failed, so you can unplug the yellow hose and cap it and you'll never have "floor only" but both floor/defrost and floor only will be floor/defrost. (the bellow has the yellow and I think grey hoses going to it - it's a push/pull configuration)

That's the cheap and easy fix.

The tougher fix is replacing that bellow. There are two ways, the proper way is to remove the dash and go in from above.

The quicker way is to cut a hole in the airbox and then patch it when you're done.

The bellow is $41 last time I checked (a few weeks ago).

Hello,
If I am going in to replace the heater core, will I have access to replace the dual servo you spoke of ? wouldn't the floor/defrost setting engage the A/C ? or only when on defrost only. If I want heat to the floor , don't I have to replace the servo ?
