I can put a gallon into a teacup, the problem is I can never get it back out! :D

I checked the owners manual, and sure enough you are correct, 21.1 gal (80 liters) for the sedan. It also states the wagon is 15.8 gal. (60 liter) so perhaps that would explain the two part numbers. This makes for a remarkable range on this car. I have gone 350 miles (about 560 km.) on a tank.

I keep forgetting what wonderful wealth of information is in the Owners Manual. Good thing to keep in the glovebox. Once when there was a question about a dash light when smogging the car I had to go to a referee and he said what ever was in the Owners Manual was what they had to accept. Saved me a bunch of trouble.

This is a little OT, but I went on a road trip yesterday in the S80 and filled up the gas tank. We headed back out on the freeway and the info computer said 505 miles to empty tank. I tend to believe it too, because it said I was averaging 26 mpg and that matched up to an actual mpg calculation I had done earlier. Love these cars for range! Not to mention the seats, ahh the seats . . . Oh, and the passing power. And did I mention the stereo? Yeah. Makes me want to forget all the repair problems.

Everyone here has a good point, but let me ask you this.

How do you calculate your mileage? I always do mileage from tank until topped off.

If I put 14 gallons in to top it off, and it lasts 300 miles, 300/14=mileage. The only way to really calculate it though is if you top off the car every time.

If you are going through a tank until the gas light comes on, then finding the closest station - that could be your 2mpg right there missing in the equation.

I always reset the trip odometer when filling up, and divide the miles traveled by the gallons. Also try to use the same pump and the same station each time. I know the auto-shutoffs on gas pumps are not very accurate, but I set the nozzle for auto-shutoff, and after it clicks off, put no more gas in.

I have a 1984 DL wagon, manual transmission, and on the interstate cruising at 70 mph, I was getting 20-21 mpg. consistently.

Im glad someone mentioned a gas light, which reminds me. Does anyone know if my 1987 760 GLE has a gas light? I've driven my car until i am like half way in the red zone of my gas gauge and no gas light has ever turned on, which surprises me because I have a whole dash of lights and switches but none seem to be the gas light.....

Anyone have any input on this one?

There is no light listed for this model.

The Owner's Manual gives this advice:
Be aware that the "usable" tank capacity will be somewhat less than the 15.8-US gal. (60 liter) maximum. When the fuel level is low, such factors as ambient temperature, the fuels "vapor pressure" characteristics, and terrain can affect the fuel pumps' ability to supply the engine with an adequate supply of fuel. Therefore, it is advisable to refuel as soon as possible when the needle nears the red zone. After the needle enters the red zone, you should be able to drive approximately 25 miles (40 km) depending on driving style and conditions.

Man, thats really odd...I would think they would of put one in there. I mean I have a Brake light and a Parking Brake light... which are both completely unnecessary to me at least. The owners manual says once you reach the red zone you only can drive 25 miles? Thats odd because I just (as in 20 minutes ago) drove around 15 miles within the red zone and my needle did not move one bit.

But thank you for clearing up the gas light question, I was thinking I might need some electrical work if there was.

THANKS!
