Replacement Struts Causing Noise when Turning

Post by Wildman »

A few months ago, I replaced the Struts and upper mounts on my 2001 S60. The new struts seem to make noise when I turn the steering wheel while rolling. The sound is a problem only on warm days. This has been expensive and exasperating, and I want to solve it for good; please read further:

I ordered the parts from FCPGroton.com, and they were the Sach's OEM front struts, and the heavy duty upper mounts. I paid a local shop to install them, and shortly after when driving on a warm day, I noticed that there was a groaning noise coming from the front when I turned the steering wheel. Thinking the local shop didn't know what they were doing, I took my car to a Volvo specialist in San Franciso, and paid for them to re-install the struts. They said there was a bushing missing, and installed it.

Shortly after that, on the next warm day, the same groaning noise appeared when turning the wheel from side to side when the car is moving. I took the car back to SF, but it is less of a problem in the cool SF air, and shop thinks I am overreacting.

Why would the problem only happen on warm days (85 degrees or warmer) Do you think that the gas charged struts are over pressurized and the warm day causes the gas to expand and put stress on the upper mounts? How can I resolve this for sure so it is done?

These being OEM struts I am a little confused as to why you would be having these issues.

If you would like to call us at 877.634.0063 and speak to one of our tech's, they would be more then happy to help you diagnose the issue.

Please call Mike at extension 206.

Thank you.

Perhaps the parts are expanding from the heat and squeezing the heavy duty mounts.

Mounts or Spring Seats?
I'm thinking Spring Seats were changed to heavy duty but the Mounts (the very top portion that has a gear in it) wasn't changed out and now it's making the groaning sounds.

Mike said he thinks it is defective upper strut mounts, manufactured by APA. I understand there is an exchange policy, but surely you must see the price of the part pales in comparison to the labor costs going on with this. I'm not sure what to say here but I hope FCPGroton is doing everything it can to prevent batches of bad parts going out. The Volvo specialist in San Francisco charge as much as my doctor does on a per-hour basis.

No way!? My doctor charges $110 for an office visit that takes about 6 minutes. That's 10 patients/hour X $110 = $1100 per hour. Surely Volvo isn't charging that much?

If his hourly charge is $110/hr and he charges you the minimum for any visit, then you get the idea.
