UPDATE: Car ran fine for 40 miles or so... then... it started running poorly (engine shook at idle, and RPM's fluctuated) - poor idle! Runs fine above idle. I removed the battery overnight and I'll see what happens in the morning. No CEL or ETS lights.
Also, I noticed my cruise control no longer works! I'll contact Xemodex, and find out what's up, and report back with updates.
FWIW, I didn't sent the original ETM off of the car - I still have it! Apparently Xemodex send me something off their shelf. Perhaps that's a problem with the program in the ETM that my 2000 V70XC doesn't like. I really don't know what happened ! It ran flawlessly during my 20 minute test drive. Let it set for about 6 hours, started it up and it ran flawlessly again. It only gave me a problem after I drove about 25 miles on the interstate - shut it off for ten minutes - restarted, and then I had the problem with the idle and engine shaking.

I had a problem a couple hundred miles after installation. I unplugged the connector, cleaned the contacts on both sides with spray electrical contact cleaner, then reconnected it, and it's run fine since then, about 4000 miles now. I did the same thing at the same time with the MAF connector.

Took car to Volvo - performed ETM reload - Lesson learned = $171. All problems solved
The ETM reload was needed because I didn't use the ETM that came in the car originally, and the ETM calibration was off - as well as the reload corrected cruise control problem. Car runs incredibly smooth, and appears to be more responsive.
A+ for Xemodex!

Well, I'm hoping it's just the holiday weekend/summer vacation thing, but I sent the dealer read-out and graph of the throttle position sensor to TDP and to Xemodex a week ago...no response yet. That pesky ETS light is still on.kalashnikat wrote:
Had a nice note from Chris Golinski, president of Xemodex, and have now sent the dealer's read-out and throttle potentiometer sensor graph to him and to Jody at TDP in Loveland (just up the interstate a couple of hours). Hoping there's a fix besides "remove and replace", but if that's what it takes, at least we should only have to do it one more time.
It still runs fine, just that danged light.
The car still drives fine as far as we can tell, but the only code on the readout is ECM 9160, which the dealer interprets as “faulty throttle position” and “Throttle position sensor 2 faulty signal,” with a notation that “DTC is found active”… I know Xemodex only replaces one sensor, but apparently both are still active, and if I'm reading the chart right, they are in opposition...one shows open when the other shows closed. "Is a Puzzlement."
… the graph they printed of the throttle response test also says ETM is over the maximum difference, 90.56 degrees.
Any new product can have the odd bug in the system, but it sure would be nice to hear something back from TDP/XemodeX.

I noticed that Xemodex only replaced one sensor as well. The other endcap was a Magnetti Marelli. I wonder if the TPS plastic film is still inside it. Is it being used for anything, or did they simply disable it? I'd hate to think that the TPS on the Magnetti Marelli side was being used for anything.
About 3500 miles after the fix I'm detecting limp mode on highway driving again! It's only happened maybe 4 or 5 times in the last two or three days, but it's gotten progressively more distinct. (once on each of the previous days, so i thought it was a fluke or i imagined it--then multiple times definitively today so i knew it was really happening!)
is the XeMODeX "band-aid" coming off? Is this probably just a "hiccup" that'll work itself out, or will this get progressively worse until I'm in the same situation I was in 4 months ago?
Thankful for the fix, hopeful for a permanent cure!

Vehicle developed a rough idle that worsened over the course of a month before XeMODeX repair. Idle dropped as low as 700rpm with spikes to 1000+. Noticeable loss of power. On cold starts vehicle would shoot rpms over 3000 (without touching the accelerator pedal).. it also happened just after pulling out of the drive way for a quick drive with the kids to school. Luckily, I was quick to control the vehicle by braking; put it straight into reverse where it barely idled at all, but made it back home to park. Restarting the vehicle would often correct the high idle, where it would start at 1,500rpm and settle to normal idle within 60 seconds. Eventually, after approx. 1 month, the generic "engine system service required" light appeared on dash - but nothing specific to ETM or otherwise.
Rang the local Melbourne (Australia) Volvo dealer who agreed it was likely ETM based on symptoms, but couldn't schedule an appointment to pull codes for over 3 weeks! The charge quoted was $160 for codes and basic diagnosis. If the ETM was found faulty, replacement $1239.00, $5.60 gasket and $65.00 soft tune. This is PARTS ONLY, no labour - I was not quoted on hours required for the job. The kicker was the service rep told me the vehicle was absolutely safe to drive for the three week waiting period until they could get me into their shop. I found this a bit unnerving.
Next, I located Barry Motor Group, in Mitcham URL: http://www.berrymotorgroup.com.au/ via a local Volvo enthusiast club. They offered to pull my codes same day, no appointment necessary for a charge of just $35. The only code
that came up was ECM-9150. All codes were cleared and reset. Check engine service lamp again returned, just at the end of the 45 minute drive home. ETM was pulled same day and shipped to XeMODeX for mod/repair.
Removal was incredibly easy and straight forward. I did have to cut the cable as couldn't get it around the starter assembly, but in fairness was working in the rain at dusk and cable hack was a simple, immediate solution. Cable was replaced by XeMODeX at ETM modification. Reinstallation to vehicle took less than 20 minutes.
Vehicle started right up correctly and has run beautifully for the past 10 days or so, everything from inner-city to highway has been tested. Full, smooth power to vehicle has been restored. No ETM lights at reinstallation, no ETM reset was required.
My cost:
$46.50USD/ $56.50AUD Australia Post (3-5 day shipping to Loveland, CO. USA)
$599.00USD/ $727.00AUD ETM
$59.00USD/ $71.00AUD 1-3 international priority Fed-Ex shipping to Melbourne, 3206 AUS.
totaling:
XeMODeX (shipping inclusive) $704.50 USD or $854.50 AUD (compared to)
Dealer ETM estimated replacement cost (NO LABOUR): $1309.00 + $160 codes/diagnostic = $1469.00AUD minimum
Finally, I was told by both the dealer and Barry Motor group to expect ETM repair around the 2K mark, when general enquiry was initially made. The above parts cost was quoted directly from the dealer parts department (I was checking availability, as well).
Very pleased with XeMODeX and would highly recommend their services. Support and communication was A+, exactly as described.

My car's lights were flickering ever since I bought the car and on the highway all of a sudden I lost alot of power. The car couldn't start so I had to drive it with the MAF unplugged. I got the TB and the injectors cleaned and I can finally drive with the MAF plugged in but it's running rough like crazy and stalling.
I'm really considering the XeMoDeX solution in the following weeks. I'm just wondering if their solution is long term because some members (well 2 in this thread) seem to have problems with theirs but I'm guessing that might just be a MAF. (I changed my MAF in may)
thanks guys
thanks XeMoDeX I'll send my ETM to you soon!

I'm a single mom with no mechanic experience. Did my research, asked a few guys that were mechanically inclined and was told removing/replacing the ETM would take longer than 10-30 minutes as stated from some owners. So I took my car to a mechanic, paid $270 (labor only) to have ETM removed and replaced after it was repaired; $65 to Fed Ex part to Xemodex, and $599 to have ETM repaired. In addition, I had to rent a car for 2 days. Anyway, shipping was fast (2 day turnaround), and customer service was great.
Although the dealership quoted me $900 (less the $120 I paid for diagnostic), I decided to go with Xemodex (even though my out of pocket expenses were more) because I read the dealer would install a new ETM that would suffer the same faulty problem and could leave me stranded again within 20,000-30,000 miles of being replaced.
The mechanic installed the repaired ETM and test drove my vehicle and I was on my way. No lights illuminated on the dashboard and the car drove fine. However, 3 days later the engine light and the ETS light illuminated as I was trying to accelerate up a bridge (how disappointing). I called Xemodex the next day and explained the problem. I was told to have the codes read. I've reset the car twice (removed battery) and had codes read at two different Auto Zones stores. Codes are as follows: P1021, P1026, P1032, P1081, P0420. I called Xemodex with the codes and they said they will research and get back with me.
I'll keep everyone posted on my progress. I hope this problem of ETS light illuminating and vehicle hesitation, surging, and decrease acceleration is resolved soon. Currently its intermittent but it appears to be getting worse and starts occuring after I've been driving for a while (my commute to work is 45 minutes driving at speeds of no more than 5-45 miles per hour.

Here's an update on my August 26, 2009 post. I sent my trouble codes to Xemodex. Jodi discussed my issues with her supervisor and he authorized her to send me a Federal Express label (via email) so I could send my ETM back to them for additional repairs. My part will arrive in Colorado today (8/28/09) at 3pm.
I was relieved to know that Xemodex honored their lifetime warranty as they stated. The staff has been very helpful and friendly throughout this ordeal. And I think they are trying to do everything they can to get me back on the road. I hope Xemodex will have my ETM shipped on Monday (Xemodex is closed on weekends) so I can have it installed by Tuesday (9/1/09). I will submit another post after my ETM is installed to let everyone know how my vehicle is performing.
I'm driving a rental car at the moment so quick turnaround is of the essense. Hopefully this repair will forever solve my ETM problem.
