C70 Convertible HP 2003 transmission slips from 2nd to 3rd
C70 Convertible HP 2003 transmission slips from 2nd to 3rd
Intermitently, the transmissioon feels & sounds like it is slipping when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. The engine revs higher and then goes into gear, jerks slightly some time. This doesn't happen all the time but I want to do something now in case it could keep it from getting worse. The car has 75,000 miles on it. If changing the transmission fluid is an option, let me know what type and any pitfalls in draining/changing it. Thanks!

Certainly I would change the transmission fluid- do a full flush. You'll need Volvo's fluid or Mobil-3309 or Toyota Type IV...both of the later are the same as Volvo's but much cheaper. Whatever you do, don't use Dexron, Mercron or Mobil-1 Synthetic ATF as these are not compatible and could spelll the end of your transmission. A How-to is located in the repair database- look/search for "new modified transmission flush" for the details.

Made in Japan, thanks for taking the time to respond! This weekend, I did a full flush using the Toyota type IV fluid. It was readily available and $4.50 a quart. I used the "drain the pan" method Vs taking off the lines. It proved easier as you have to go underneath to drain from the pan, initially, any way. Just need a tub and position it properly for the outflow. I obtained right around 3qts, upon draining. I did the flush using 12 qts. The old fluid was definetly dark and muddly looking. I checked the dipstick when cold and it looked like the new fluid level was correct. But when test driving, I found the trans slipping as bad or worse than before, very disappointing. Then, I checked the fluid while hot and the dipstick showed, I was low on fluid. I added another 1/2 qt and she is shifting without any slip, very smooth.....so far. It would appear, accuracy of fluid volume is critical. Only a day, into it but very encouraging!
