240 1993 flywheel/drive plate alignment

Post by 240Dad »

This is a continuation of 240 1993 Rear Main Seal replacement.

My 240 has 175,000+ miles and is an automatic. I replaced the rear main seal tonight and, when I put the drive plate back on I realized that, even though I had marked the plate to the housing so that I could put it on the same way, I had forgotten and turned the crank to clean it. So, I don't know if I have lined it up the way it came off (more than likely not). This car has the speed sensor that reads the drive plate and it is intact. I notice that there are two "pins" sticking out on the side of the drive plate that faces the engine.
My question is, how do I ensure that the driveplate (flywheel) is positioned correctly before installing the tranny?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Just a tip, be sure to take the crank sensor off the transmission bell housing before you put the transmission back in. a little nick and it's all over.

I take it from your other post about TDC that you had an answer to this one?

Thanks, yes, I figured it out. I found TDC and put the drive plate on with the pins at about 2 o'clock and 3:30. The only hitch was that, with TDC it didn't quite line up like a photo that I found on another site. Then I realized that my timing was set to 10 deg before TDC. Once I lined the crank pulley timing mark up with 0 degrees, all was well.
