240 1993 Clock wiring

Post by 240Dad »

The analog clock in my car is not working as is. However, when I took the dash out to replace the odometer cog and replace the back light bulbs I removed the clock and tested it. The back side of the clock has a hot terminal and a ground terminal. There is a wire to each of these that come from the dash unit. I unhooked the wires and used a jumper from the battery to the hot and ground wires. The clock worked fine when wired direct to the source.
My question: is there any reason why I can't wire an always hot wire to the clock hot terminal and a ground to the ground terminal and bypass the source from the dash unit?
Thanks,
Bill

Attached is a wiring diagram for the instrument cluster. The clock should have 3 wires, the third coming from the panel rheostat.

As the Volvo hot wire comes from fuse #8 which is hot at all times there is no reason why you can't run a wire direct with one proviso: it must be fuse protected.

Bill,
I don't see a link for the dash wiring diagram. Could you try again, please?
I only see 2 wires. The black one shown says 12 volts at the base on the plastic. The brown one seems to be a ground. I saw on the diagram in my Haynes manual that there should be a 3rd wire that is red but I can't locate it. Please take a look at these pics and see if you can tell where the third wire would go.
Thanks,
Bill

If I could remember where I had put my memory I would have an easier time remembering things.

Apologies for missing out the attachment. Here it is.

Of course it is going to confuse things even further as this is the Volvo diagram and it shows black, red and green. Black is earth (ground), red is power from fuse #8 via the circular connector contact #9 and green is from the rheostat via the circular connector contact #10.

Your clock doesn't show any lights attached to it so is it possible that it receives light from one of the bulbs in the panel? If so it wouldn't have a separate green wire.
