850 96 Shock replacement question
My dad has an 850 which needs all shocks replaced. I am still very new to repairs, but I have repaired my ABS unit and successfully installed a new heater core and alternator, so I am not completely new to DIY. How complicated is the process of replacing the front and rear shocks? Is it something that I could handle? I have not really found any guides, so I don't even know what types of tools I would need.

The rear shocks are relatively simple. You just need to be careful when you remove the nuts at the bottom. The studs have a tendency to break and at that point about the only option is to replace the entire trailing link arm. A good soaking with PB Blaster for a day or so helps.
The front struts are more complicated but they really aren't that difficult. You do need a spring compressor but you can rent a set from most auto parts stores. When I say rent it is more like borrowing - they charge your credit card for the full price of the tool and then they issue a full credit when the tool is returned. A good writeup on the struts is here:

When I replace the struts I always replace the spring seats at the same time. I have been buying XC90 spring seats, they only cost a few dollars more and they are much tougher.

I just did the struts on my 96 850 using the guide Lee posted, If you have done the repairs you mentioned this should be pretty easy I had to soak the bolts in PB blaster to break them free. Make sure everything is real tight when you are done
