My PS pump squeals occasionally. Car has 98,00 miles on it. I believe I need to replace it (the power steering pump).
1. What brand of aftermarket replacement is the best combination of quality and price?
2. Is a kit available that would allow me to replace the bearing/bushing that is squealing?
3. Is there an instruction available that will tell me exactly what to do to remove and replace the old one?
Comment - I have an instruction sheet which I find of no value because it tells me to take off the old one, place the old pulley on the new one, and put the new one on. Well - I already know that. Iwould be looking for details.
4. Will I need special equipment? (Pulley remover? What kind?)
5. Will I need to do anything with the A/C compressor?
6. Will my hands get dirty? (Just kidding)

Is it the bearing or the drive belt that is squealing?
I can't find anyone who supplies the bearing - not even Volvo (there's a surprise).
FCPgroton advertise a rebuilt pump for your car which is what I would be going for.
You may need a puller for the pulley but, unfortunately, my book doesn't say.
You shouldn't need to do anything with the compressor. The instuctions I have are quite complex so I shall post them for you:
1. Remove pump to bracket retaining bolts.
2. Place a drain pan under the pump.
3. Disconnect the hydraulic connections at the pump.
4. Remove the pump.
Installation is a reverse of the above, minus the drain pan of course. Fill and bleed the system and check for leaks.
Very complicated but you won't get your hands dirty if you wear latex gloves.
Bill.

Bill,
Thanks for the reply to my question.
A couple of followup questions:
1. Yes, it is the bearing/bushing rather than the belt. Do you happen to know if this is an urgent matter, that is, it develops into a catastrophic event where the bearing seizes? Or do I have time to get to it when I have time (couple of weeks)?
2. What fluid is recommended?
3.Do you recommend a shop manual for this car? Is there one?
Thanks

1. Some bearings can squeal for a long time and not cause any major problem. Others will collapse immediately. If you are going to be able to do this repair in the time frame you give you should be OK but if the squealing becomes worse stop using the car immediately.
2. Automatic transmission fluid.
3.Haynes do a manual for the 240. I have the older manual and it has served me well for many years. http://www.haynes.com/products/?searchT ... &x=11&y=12
