850 turbo 1996 vibration damper guard

I noticed with the vibration damper guard that the bolts are very close to the timing belt. Is this to prevent the belt from jumping?

I have read your post several times but I can't figure out what bolts your are referencing.

Do you perhaps have a picture that you can post?

The bolts that hold the vibration guard in place.
THe bolts only have a bit of threads.

There is plate that wraps around the bottom of the crankshaft.
It is held in place by two 10mm bolts.
I had to remove this to get my belt off.
The end of the two bolts are very close to the timing belt.
About 1/16 of an inch. Is this normal. I guess I am worried that the end of the bolt might scrape the belt and tear it.

Those are by design and, if the timing belt is properly installed, you have nothing to fear. I think they did design them to be close to try to keep the belt on if the tensioner fails. I must kinda work, I had a failing tensioner on my '94 but between the plastic spacer on the tensioner and those bolts the belt never jumped. Obviously I parked it once I discovered the problem though.
