1999 s80 t6 overheating

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

1999 s80 t6 overheating

Post by brianjb2002 »

why?!
i was driving down the interstate at about 60 miles an hour when the temp started to climb and the car overheated.

i just bought the car about 2 weeks ago, and have discovered someone had put a bolt in the coolant overflow hose. we took that out and it doesnt seem to overheat, the fan kicks on but then turns off when it cooled down a little. coolant is still coming out of the overflow hose... any ideas? it has 244,000 miles on it.

when the car cools down it sucks all the coolant out of the resv.

any ideas or suggestions?
we have checked and changed the oil and there isnt a sign that there is coolant mixing with the oil so im thinking it maybe a thermostat?

Can you take a pic of the hose and post it? I'm pretty sure there is no "overflow" hose - if the system is overpressurized the reservoir cap lets the coolant out around the sides and it flows down over the tank. At least that's the way the system looks on my car. There is a vent hose that goes from the reservoir forward along the fender, then along the top of the radiator, but it connects to the radiator on the driver's side. I believe this hose is to vent any air from the radiator back into the reservoir. If this hose was disconnected on your car it may have let coolant out and that could be why the bolt was placed in the end of the hose.

I can take a picture tonight and load it on here I know the hose you speak of and thats not it, it sits to the right of the cap and is only 2-3 inches long... I took the bolt out and the engine stays cooler but still runs warmer while driving but not near the red line, and I dump alot of antifreeze... when i plug it back up it idles just fine at the proper temperature but if i rev the engine up the resivour fills with fluid and starts coming out around the cap after a few mins and all the hoses get hard with all the pressure... Is there a way to relieve some of that pressure with out constantly losing fluids?

It's starting to sound like you have a blown head gasket that is letting combustion pressure into the cooling system. If that's the problem you have to take the head off to install a new gasket.

You think it could be the head gasket if my oil isn't milky and I am not getting any white smoke out of my exhust? Do you have any suggetions on where to find a head gasket? I have called autozone, pepboys, napa, and advance auto parts near me and none of them carry it. I dont really want to go throught a dealer and pay an arm and a leg for one. Are there any good sites for volvo parts online?
