95 850 rear brake 'chattering'

Post by Passingphaseone »

Hello, about a year and a half ago I had this problem while braking and coming to a stop. Randomly, the rear end felt like I just turned on a massive super-sonic mega bass booster and the back of the car shook, shuttered, chattered, but the car would easily come to a stop. I ordered and installed the aftermarket brake shims someone told me about. The problem stopped for about a year. The past few months the problem has occasionally come back. I thought I'd just reorder the shims again and do it all over again. (easy cheap fix). Well I still have the problem. The pads look fine. Do I need to apply more grease to the surfaces of the shims? Is there another reason my brakes are 'chattering'? The car has 85,000 miles.

Welcome to MVS,

If you are running cut shims (half shims) you can likely just flip the shims over and re-grease the back of the pads and the shims. If the pads are otherwise in good shape that is where I would start - even if they aren't half shims it is quick, easy, and cheap to re-grease them. I use Sil-Glyde on mine.

Just bought my 850 last week; replacing the rear brakes was my first job. I was wondering what those half-shims were for...now I know! I'll be retrieving them from the trash and re-doing the brakes tomorrow, because I can't stand the noise!

Welcome to MVS,

Let us know how it all works out. If you bought the typical auto parts store pads you will likely never get rid of the squeal. The OEM pads are very dirty and quite expensive but they are quiet. I have done OK with the Mintex Red pads with enough SilGlyde on the shims at about half the price and half the dust.

I don't know what it is about Volvo brakes but I have had problems with most aftermarket brake pads since my 142. The 740s were both bad about it as well.
