Where is the AC water drain on a '92 740 Wagon?

Post by RocknTommy »

I have had this issue on other cars where water will come in on the passenger side floor when the AC has been running for some time. Usually there is a little rubber drain hose that runs out the bottom of the fire wall area and can get clogged. Can't seem to find it on this car? Thanks in advance!

It is on the bulkhead (firewall), passenger side. It may be flush with the bulkhead or there may be a tube attached that runs down toward the frame rail. The plastic casting for the lower air-box half actually includes the drain spigot.

It must be inside the car to a frame rail?
I can't seem to find any hose in the usual areas.
The evaporator drain must be really clogged.
Getting a ton of water in the passenger side floor

The easy way failed!! :(

The not so easy way is to remove the blower motor, which may be getting ready to fail if the lower bearing has been covered by water. It is easier to do on a 740 than on a 240.

Have the radio code handy then disconnect the battery negative.
Remove the under dash panel on the passenger side.
Remove the right side kick panel over the fuel ecu.
Remove the 2 screws holding the ecu and remove the ecu. Remove the 3 screws holding the ECU bracket, and remove the bracket.
Remove the 5 screws holding the blower motor in place and remove the blower motor. You may find that the motor housing is sealed with RTV to stop air leaks so you may have to fight with it.
Remove the electrical connector, earth (ground) lead and the motor cooling air tube.
You should now be able to see the drain hole which can be cleaned out with an air line - not the best way as you tend to just move the debris to a new position - or gently clean it out with your all purpose wire coat hanger. What did mechanics do before the wire coat hanger was invented?

Whilst you are in there inspect the lower bearing - any signs of water or rust probably means the lower bearing is on its way out and the motor will soon fail.

I have had this issue with other cars and the
coat hanger will do the trick, plus I know now where to
find that line
Thanks for the great info Bill!

I found it. On other cars where I have fixed
this issue, it is a drain tube ranging from
1" to 3" long so that is what I was searching for.
No wonder I could not find it
On this car it is a little nub in the corner of the
passenger side fire wall.
With a cut coat hanger as a tool, cleaned it out and now all is fine.

This must be one of the ways Volvo cut their overheads.

Thank you for the update and the picture of the drain tube.
