940 tubo wagon -1992- Will not shift into overdrive.

Post by Ben-jamin »

My new 92' 940 has 116,000 miles. smooth running machine, but won't shift to overdrive. At 70mph the tach is @ 4500rpm. Up arrow on dash stays on and when you push the overdrive button on the shifter nothing happens. I seem to remember my 89' 240DL having a similar problem that was fixed with a relay or solenoid by the mechanic.

My question is, if this is the problem, can I easily trouble-shoot and fix this myself?

Any comments or guidance on this are welcome. If I do it myself I will be sure to post picture and directions to help the next guy. Thanks.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Take a look at: 740solenoid

Whilst this is for the 740 it is the same for the 240 and 940.

If you have a faulty solenoid you can either replace it or obtain a solenoid bypass kit from one of the site's sponsors, IPD, whose link is at the top of the forum. This does away with overdrive giving you a 4 speed box. Unless you intend towing a trailer or live at the top of a mountain you should have no problems.

I decided to go with the bypass kit from iPd. It took me 30 min. and the problem is solved for good. :D I planed to post pictures and stuff, but if anyone else makes this fix, instructions that come with the kit from iPd are simple and well illustrated.

A hearty thank you to you Bill. I have spent hours on this site just gleaning from the knowledge you have shared with others. Thanks again.

Thanks for the update Ben!

If you've already taken pictures of the job and would like to upload them, feel free! We can add it to the repair database and it may give someone the initiative to tackle it on their own.
