V70XC Oil Drain Plug Washer

Post by PGFaini »

Should the oil drain plug washer be replaced with each oil change? Is the proper washer type flat copper, or crush-type aluminum? My Volvo dealer only stocks the flat copper one, and I'm concerned about stripping the threads on the aluminum oil pan. Is 26lb/ft the proper torque? Thanks.

Yes. The Haynes manual suggests 26ft.lbs of torque for the engine oil drain plug.

I use aluminum washers, and have been known to reuse the same one for two oil change cycles. Aluminum is the 'official' material for this.

FWIW, I have a magnetic drain plug, and have never found any metal filings etc. on it in ~2 years of use.

The copper washers are used on the 200, 700, and 900 series Volvo with steel oil pans. You should replace the washer each time to reduce the chance of leaks, It is cheap insurance
