license plate lights

When lights are on, and the deck lid (trunk) raised I have lights burning but close the lid and the lights go out. The other lights are burning , etc "taillights...

I had the same problem on our S60. the wiring harness breaks somewhere around where the wire extends and flexes between the body and the rear decklid. With the constant opening and closing it stresses the wires and a broken wire results. I ordered a new harness from my dealer to replace it. I forget the cost, but it was worth the time savings trying to find the exact break and fixing it and reinstallation. It is a simple unplug old harness, plug in new harness operation.
