XC70 screams when wet

Post by pelaton »

I have a 2006 XC70 with 41K on it. It runs great but twice now, when it's been VERY wet on the roads, we'll start to hear this screaming sound from, I think, underneath. The pitch does not vary with speed and if I throw it into neutral and cost, it still has no change. We'll come to a stop and I'll race the engine for a minute then it seems to quiet down. We'll start driving and once again, it starts. I can't create it, or stop it. After the roads dry up, it fully stops. I don't notice any performance issues while it's happening. The temperature stays constant. It's just this horrible, loud screaming/whining. We bought the car for Christmas last year with 32K on it and within a week, the turbo had to be changed. It was blowing smoke. It's been fine since. Any thoughts?

You have rain squeal
Common in R's not so common in XC's
The exhaust expands when wet and it contacts the driveshaft,
See Volvo for the fix
