1999 S80 - Replaced Battery In Key Fob Remote Now It Doesn't

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

1999 S80 - Replaced Battery In Key Fob Remote Now It Doesn't

Post by pete8475 »

Over the last few weeks I've had to get progressively closer and closer to my car to have the keyfob work to lock and unlock the doors. It got to the point where I had to hold the remote to the window, it wouldn't even work a few inches away from the car.

So I put a new CR2032 battery in it and it still does not work. Using a multimeter I found that the new battery is in fact putting out just over 3 volts and the old one well under 1 volt.

So what do I do at this point? The owner's manual does not cover this situation.

Did you put the battery in the fob the right way?

The remote fob for my 97 850 got weaker and weaker, finally wouldn't work at all. I changed batteries, still wouldn't operate. Checked the fuse, it LOOKED good.
I thought I was going to have to get a new central locking module or alarm relay, but took a chance and changed the fuse, and presto!, works fine.

You might have to re-sync your remote to the car. I've heard of this being done on some American cars, but I'm not sure of the procedure for Volvo (if there is one).

Do your door buttons work? If you can't lock or unlock with these, you have to reinitialize the system. VADIS says to unlock the drivers door with the key, or use the remote control (which doesn't help here).

I couldn't find a reference to initializing just the remote to the car...

The buttons on the doors work.

If you know you put the battery in correctly, and you know the battery is good, then the only thing to do is test to see if the remote is sending a signal. Unfortunately, it sounds like the remote is toast.
