:) Just bought a 1989 760 Turbo! -- Need Help

Post by Jaguar »

hey guys. I just bought an 89 760 turbo from a family friend dirt cheap. I am surprised at what a great car this is. I really like it. However, the damned thing runs like crap.

Basically what it does is it sputters and jerks around, and then it'll die. Anytime I get on the gas she starts jerkin and dying. It stalls quite often and the only way I can limp her around the block is in low gear at 30 mph.

In my opinion it's not getting either enough air or enough fuel. But when it dies I can smell fuel and it feels like it's flooded. I wait a few minutes and it starts up again, but it's super frustrating. I'm no mechanic but I don't think it's getting enough air. My Dad took the car to the shop and the guy said it was something electrical. My dad doesn't remember what he said the problem was. All he remembers is that it was $1300 to fix it so he left. And now it's on me.

Any help would be appreciated. I know that some of you must have experience with these cars. Maybe this is a common problem? I read online that fuel pumps go out and fuel filters can be a problem, but I don't know if that's the case here. Maybe it's the AFM?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. Where is the switch to open the sunroof?

I just bought one last September off ebay! LOVE IT! My sunroof switch is on the dash visually behind the steering wheel. Your sedan might be on the console down by the emergency brake. Do this...do you know any car "buddies"? I found a great mechanic by asking a GM dealer for a reference. If he doesn't work on Volvos, then it won't hurt him to recommend someone who does. You can find good parts on Ebay also. Like a Mass Air Meter, fuel injectors, etc. Because I found this great mechanic, I was able to get a harmonic balancer replaced, a new timing belt, new front crankshaft seal replaced, and a used radiator fan blade for only $400. My dealership friend said it was equal to about $800 worth of work. Hope all goes well.
