New engine installed 12/2008 - received two free oil changes and then at 140,000 miles (6,000 miles since installation) service done. Drove about 30 miles, making two stops before parking for the night at my dad's (in San Jose - I live in Sacramento). Next day, after noon, went to visit a friend & car would not start, and the few times it did, it quickly died. A couple of times it sounded like all the belts were screeching and the other times it started, sounded like wasn't getting fuel. Had to drive Dad's truck back to Sac. so could have car towed back to shop - learned I needed to replace fuel pump (had been replaced in 2001). (Luckily my dad helps me with costs - so now I owe him extra and am paying $300/mo. to him on new engine). Drove back to get my car on Friday, drove back to Sac. on Saturday, went to get together Saturday night, drove nowhere Sunday. Monday, just to lightrail and back stopping on the way home to fill the tank. Tuesday, to lightrail and back and upon exiting the car, discovered floor saturated, driver's side, under mat. Doesn't smell like gas, looks like some type of oil, thin, lubricant type. Can you tell me where to check for leak that would be coming into the car like this? Perhaps one of the lines wasn't reattached and tightened properly - don't know - but am preturbed with this new issue.

Bill - it took me awhile to see that you had replied. It said I had no new messages - so I'm glad that you replied. The color is a light brown.

Was it raining when you found the liquid? There is a drain tube in the heater/evaporator housing that can become blocked and the water has to go somewhere.

There aren't too many things that can leak in that area:
Heater - liquid should be the colour of anti-freeze unless the system is holding a lot of rust. You would also see that the coolant had gone down.
Brakes - possible leak from the rear of the master cylinder but that would be the colour of brake fluid and, with that amount, you would have no brakes.

Bill - no, has been dry & hot here in Sacto. The fuel pump was replaced on the 15th, brought car home on the 19th, first started noticing the wet area on the 24th. It's definitely some type of slippery oil. I tried to determine which piece under the hood is the fuel pump since my co-worker said, no I only have one fuel pump but two injectors that feed off of it, so I looked for a fairly new part with new connectors with two lines coming off of it. Can you also tell me which is the fuel pump? Now, if it is the master cylinder, when the service was done (the 11th) and then the no start problem happened on the 12th & I left it there and they determined it was the fuel pump-he said the brakes were good-at 50%.
Well, I can't seem to attach pictures. Maybe you could show me one of the fuel pump so I know what it looks like . . . .

Whether you have only one fuel pump or two you won't find it/them in the engine compartment.

Most 740s have two pumps. The exception is the Regina engine which only has one in the tank.

If you have two pumps there is one in the tank and the main pump is in a cradle under the floor near the right hand rear door. The attached shows the main fuel pump (part #1).

Have you checked brake fluid and coolant reservoirs?

Okay! Now you've given me two good pieces of info. In 2001 when I had the fuel pump replaced (by SVS in Sacramento), the owner did confirm that the damage could infact have been caused by someone running over something which flew up underneath my car - that it was in a "cage" not a box and it was quite possible something could have been thrown up under and gone into the openings of this "cage". So, when you said a cradle, I knew that I had looked under the car, for where this liquid might have been coming from and did see the cradle that holds the pump, and there was quite a bit of drippy, liquid all around the cradle (that's why I contacted you to see if they didn't do something correct when replacing the fuel pump-and I would think it should be pretty clean around it). But, I must now let that go since the only place where the liquid is, is under the driver's feet. Now, to the coolant - today my daughter ran two errands in the heat of the day and said when she stopped at the 2nd errand, allot of coolant came out and then an hour later when she picked me up the fan was coming up again (we had this problem in the past when I twice told him that this should not be happening, especially right after them checking all fluid levels, etc. & that it is much hotter in Sacto. than San Jose). So, I will further check the coolant situation -- when this happened a third time before, as I ws leaving for vacation and I almost had CSAA tow me back to San Jose, I decided to have him tow me home if we could stop and get some collant on the way home. I waited a few hours and added it properly, the next morning was the first time ever the car registered cold at start up and gradually came up to a normal temperature and I never had a problem again. They must be just adding it & not making sure to release any bubbles that can get in there and my dad & I agree, that we also don't think they do a proper test drive after they complete the work. In fact, I mentioned that since they know I always drive back to Sacto. after going there, so I'd appreciate if they would also jump on and off the freeway or an expressway and then check things again before I pick the car up. If I do like before and this takes care of it coming out when you stop and the fan from kicking on, I will also hope that the fluid build up under my feet stops. I plan to do some errands tomorrow, so I'll buy some new coolant and then I'm heading to Clear Lake (100 miles vs. 130 to San Jose), so Sunday when I return, I should know if whole problem is solved. Thank you so much. I will contact you either Sunday evening or Monday after work, again, and let you know. Again - thanks for knowing what you're talking about and helping me pin point where it's coming from.

You are welcome.

When you add the new coolant do so slowly and have the heater control on max heat. This allows the coolant to circulate into the heater and avoids a build up of air in the system. As you pour in the coolant you should massage the two large radiator hoses from time to time. Again this minimizes the risk of an air lock in the system. When you first start the car after adding the coolant leave the heater control on max heat until hot air is being blown out of the vents. It may be uncomfortable for a short time if it is hot outside but it does show that the coolant is circulating into the heater.

If you need a cooler place to do this bring it over to the UK where the temperature outside my house is hovering around 5C (41F). :roll:

I knew about massaging the hoses and making sure there are no bubbles; no air gets locked in there - but I did forget about running the heater then too. I filled my tank earlier, bought the coolant and then decided to get 2 new tires (will get the other two in 3 wks.). I also have issues with them doing this in the past - remember I mentioned they don't seem to get it that it's much hotter in Sacto. I think I also told you, after taking it back once for this (with other engine) and then planned to take it back again - but instead, got towed home, waited a couple of hours, did as I had been taught (started the car, added it slowly and squeeze those hoses to be sure bubbles pop, etc.) and next morning, startetd it up & was amazed to find that for the 1st time, the car actually registered cold and then gradually warmed up. It has ever since and never had problems with it again for the past year & a half. So, I guess when it comes to them checking all fluids and topping them off, they just fill them all up & that's it. So, you're pretty sure, so far, it's the antifreee coming in somehow - but it's not like the heater core or something that might me needed replacement next? I heard the part is cheap, but the job is expensive - getting to it, etc. SO, IS THERE A LINE THAT SHOULD BE CONNECTED BETTER OR HAS THIS BEEN HAPPENING BECAUSE IT'S BUBBLING IN THERE AND BEFORE IT STARTED RUNNING OUT WHEN YOU'D STOP, SOME WAS BEING FORCED TO ESCAPE AND THAT'S JUST WHERE IT ENDED UP RUNNING OVER AND IN? Like I said, within an hour I'm heading to Clear Lake - wanted to let the car cool down again after running errangs today and getting new tires - so I'll see if I've got the magic touch again . . . . then I'll write you again Sunday, late afternoon to see if it seems to be better and maybe it'll dry up - & then I'll see if you think there is someplace else I should check as to where/how it's coming in, ok?
