Repeated minor fuel evaporation leak code occurred (P0442) & failed to be corrected with sealing gas cap with plastic bag, thus making a hose leak the likely culprit. The next most frequent source of this code is a fractured and leaking charcoal canister "J" tube. Because of a weak design by Volvo, the tube cracks due to aging/heat, vertical vibration, and lack of any support bracket near where it is crimped to the canister. The canister and tube are viewable by removing back driver's side wheel. Look for an approximate 5/8 inch black rubber hose about 12 inches inside the conical black rubber bumper, and tucked directly up under floor pan. From directly below, you can look up and see and feel longitudinal cracks that form just distal to the metal clamp. Mine was cracked on top and bottom, and makes sense because of the up and down vibration with road bumps.
Rather than drop the exhaust pipe/muffler and then heat shield to expose the canister, I simply smeared silicone sealer into the cracks and around the tube. Then, I placed two zip ties around the tube at the crack locations and tightened sufficient to close the cracks but not deform the hose.
After resetting the trouble code, I have had no more P0442 alerts, and saved a sizable dealer bill fixing this common problem.

Dear (Dr) Jake,
Thanks so much for your wonderful repair information !! It worked exactly as you said. BTW, nobody but an MD uses the word "distal", so you must be an MD.

Yes, Yendis,
Physicians would call the "J" hose leak a "Type I" aortic dissection or aneurysm. I used a long hemostat to tighten up the zip ties, but any needle nose will do. To easily install, the ties were first looped around the hose near the mid point of the canister, then slid back to reinforce the hose where cracked and leaking. Let's hope the repair lasts a few years. Best of luck and please share your own repair ideas // Jake of Sigourney

Great write up Jake! I will have to take a look at mine because I am getting the same code! Thanks.
They've done studies you know. 60% of the time I work, every time!
I replaced the J hose last year, what a PITA to get at, hope your method lasts a long time.
I'm now back here looking for info on another Evap Leak, this time it's a large leak according to the code.
All of the hose I can see look good and the purge valve is OK. Gas cap is new.
Hope it isn't the valve above the fuel tank, what a stupid place to put it.

I have a #0442 CEL Code on a 01 V70 2.4T. I finally found the J hose. It looks like it has been replaced. It's dated 2/2/10 which is the same date as the hose I just bought to replace it. I am going to replace the gas cap too. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
I have not looked at mine, 2003.V70 2.4T ,102K ...BUT if heat is a problem, wape with heat wrap, ie; header wrap etc..and a find way to support it ?brandonbeach14 wrote:I have a #0442 CEL Code on a 01 V70 2.4T. 1998 Volvo V70R AWD, is the J-hose somewhere around the driver's side, rear-wheel? I've been unable to shake this P0442 code. After several resets, it keeps coming back, but only after a long trip at low speeds/idle.

Take a look in front of the gas tank against the bottom of the floor above. It was more towards the center of the car on mine. Also take a look at your fuel filler neck. A pinhole ending up being the culprit on my car. Have you replaced the gas cap lately? Good Luck
if it is a large leak check the rollover valve rubber connections mine was broken but the only way to tell was when i removed the bracket for it ro check the fuel pressure reg the i found it but i have an 850 so i dont know about the v70 but give it a try
