2002 S80 ignition key cylinder just "broke"

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2002 S80 ignition key cylinder just "broke"

Post by chrisbruck »

My wife went out to the car one day while shopping and called me saying the key wouldn't turn at all in the ignition. I told her to turn the steering wheel hard one way and the other and still no luck. I drove out there and sure enough, the key wouldn't even turn to the first position. After fiddling for about an hour, I called the tow truck to bring it to the dealer. They looked at it and said a tumbler broke and they needed to special order a new cylinder (about $520 parts and labor, ouch).

There was no warning before this happened. Anyone else experienced this?

The wife may have experienced some trouble with it before but probably didn't think anything of it. It does happen fairly often. Part number is 31253385 which is for the "coded" cylinder, meaning it comes in special for your car. Only your keys will fit that cylinder, although it does take 7-10 days to get the part, as it is made and shipped out of Germany. Any questions please send an email.
