Advice on catalytic converter replacement?

Post by bluezero000 »

As the annual inspection approaches, I need to replace cat. to get rid of CEL -- yes, the code points to cat. Any DIY advice is greatly appreciated.

Are you getting a code for the catalytic converter? You should know first that a faulty rear o2 sensor can cause a code to be thrown for bad catalyst.

Well, I just changed the rear O2 sensor. The code used to be bad rear O2 sensor but now it's EFI-443 (only). However, I found the following statement on the Internet:
According to Volvo Cars of North America, Inc., in order to prevent contamination from reaching the probe's reference air, new routing has been developed for sensor wiring. If one oxygen sensor is replaced, the new Oxygen Sensor Cable must be installed for both sensors.
I didn't replace Oxygen Sensor Cable. :( Should I give the cable a try before going for cat.?

It's worth a try. If that doesn't work, you can get a magnaflow catalytic converter off of eBay for a really good price. Usually around $50 for the converter and most exhaust shops will charge about $40 to weld a cat in.

I need to have the cat converter replaced on my 2000 XC V70 wagon. What is your opinion on the universal converters? A muffler shop has told me that they can do it for a fraction of the Volvo dealer. I might mention that the indepedent shop comes highly recommended but NOT a Volvo dealer. Has anyone had any trouble with the universal parts???
Thanks for your time.

I've been using a 3" Magnaflow universal converter that I bought on eBay for $55 or so for almost a year now. A muffler shop welded it in for $40. I easily passed emissions testing too and TX is a lot more strict on it than many states. I would highly recommend using the Magnaflow converter versus getting one at the dealer.

I had a cat. converter (universal) put in my 2000 XCv70 today, they reset the service engine light and in about 8 miles it came back on again. Any suggestions? The OBDII code was for a cat. converter.

What brand converter is it? Also, how many miles on the car? Has the rear o2 sensor ever been changed?

First, this site has been exceptionally helpful to me and saved me a whole bunch of $$$ as well. THANX.

Now, Volvo 2000 XC70 throwing off CEL indicating Cat Converter below efficiency, am researching buying 3" Magnaflow Converter as recommended elsewhere on this board.

Vendor is recommending purchase of a "Bunge" as well. Do I need this for my car??

What does this do??

Any help is appreciated.
