XC90 Leaks from Sunroof Drain

Post by MammaDean »

This is the second summer that my XC90 has been flooded in the front passenger floor. This time I had over an inch of standing water on the floor. The mechanic found one tiny leaf - smaller than a dime - in the sunroof drain and said that was the problem. The sunroof is rarely opened and was certainly not open today in the rain. Can this really be the problem? Last year my car was in the shop 38 days for the same problem. I am told it is because I park outside! Are there any known tech reports on this problem and what can I do? Thanks for your help

My XC90 spent 33 days in the shop after a leak destroyed the main electrical harness last year and has been off road twice since due to leaks somewhere near the wiper motor.
Today it's off the road again with water sloshing somewhere inside the front of the car.

My 52 plate XC90 D5 SE Auto is going in for 2 days to get the water drained & blockage removed. It's there under the carpet, sloshing around! Heart breaking really. The water's being playing havoc with the electric sensors as well (anti skid warning is on, brake light warning is on etc etc). Apparently the garage will drill out a drainage hole under the car to get all the water out. Hopefully the sensors will be undamaged.
So far they've quoted me about 4 hours for the repair. Really great garage, I've used them for years & have total trust in them.
Let you know the outcome next week.

Dissapointing to hear about this problem with other owners too. Come on Volvo, how can a leaf wreck our cars!

It has been a long time since the other comments were posted, but since I found them helpful in chasing down my leak, I wanted to be sure and tell you the resolution that I found. To be brief, a "technical service bulletin" concerning this issue was published by Volvo. An old friend with a Volvo service business was kind enough to tell me that, after I told him I was $1600 into figuring out what the problem was. I have not been able to ascertain the date this bulletin was issued, but the 3rd Volvo dealer I tried replaced the sunroof drains with larger capacity tubing and rerouted them. Clearly a design flaw, but in the meantime, you want to get your beautiful XC90 repaired and dried out and enjoyable again without hassle. I am happy to be done with covering my vehicle when it rains and bailing out the passenger compartment. Using the language of "I know that a technical service bulletin was issued regarding this problem" got the job done. Also, the technical service bulletin is a subscription service and your service person may not know about it nor subscribe to it. Best of luck to you.

I brought my XC90 to Volvo today with water soaking the floor and sloshing around. The Service rep said: I have five of them in here for the same thing. I know exactly what it is. It's clogged drains. We remove everything, dry it out, and then cut off the bottom end of the hoses...Bad design. We don't know why Volvo designed it that way, so we just cut off the bottom two inches of the hoses.
Does anyone know the Technical Service Bulletin number or have a copy?
Sounds like a design defect to me.
Pls email reply.

I recently bought a 2004 XC 90 T6. It has not ever been wrecked and is in pristine condition. However, the sunroof leaks any time I drive it through the car wash. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of car wash. It does not seem to leak in the rain, and we have had it in some heavy downpours but it leaks in the carwash and the leaks appear to be at both front corners. Is this a clogged drain issue? If so, what can I do to resolve it?

Thanks

All I can say is that our 04, XC90 has never leaked and now is at 54k miles. Good Luck to all on getting their water problems fixed.

Thank you for the previous post!! I removed the 2 bolts holding the handle, popped off the cover and the problem was pretty clear. The drain itself was not plugged. The drain tube was actually pulled out of the plug so the water was draining right down the side and into the floor. I ended up removing the seats and carpet and sucked out at least 2 gallons of water with a shopvac. Everything is back to normal!! Thank you!! :D
