stalling, wait a few min. and cranks right up

I just purchase my first volvo several months ago. I had to put a motor in from the start. I just recently replace the alternator and the air intake tube. Lately, I have notice that the temperture gauge only rises to placement 5 if completely cold is 6. Also when I am driving down the road, my car just stops and all of the dash lights come on. I let it sit for a while and it cranks up. This is scary because everyone I called said that in order for them to fix the problem, it needs to do it while they have the car and they don't have time to drive the car around. Please help me!!!!

http://www.volvospeed.com/CheckEngine.htm <--- Pull your codes and tell me what you get. This will only work on '95 and older models. If you are otherwise getting a check engine light, have the codes read by the auto parts store. Do you have pressure in the fuel rail when this occurs? Also what type of cars do you all have?

Generally, the symptoms you're describing can be caused by a couple different things:

1. Fuel Pump Relay
2. Mass Airflow Sensor

I have to agree about the MAF sensor. My old Volvo ('88 240) had the exact same symptoms, but after replacing the MAF, everything was fine again.

Okay as of monday I had had enough of this issue with my car it stalled on the interstate I was almost killed!! So I took it to my mechanic who has done nothing but wonderful things to my car & very reasonably priced I might add, he had my car for 1 day, he cleaned the throttle body, repaired one vacum hose got it back Wed. & it still stalled on me so I took it back he had it are you ready the problem was a bad distributor cap & a fried rotor. I have been stall free since Wed. afternoon Hope this helps!!

:( there are alot of 850's that seem to have this cut out problem. I have the same in mine and haven't found the cause. Same tech tip-have to have the car in motion and wait till it stops before being able to diagnose it. I agree it is really dangerous.
Has anyone found the cause definitely????
Can Matthew the administrator collect from us members who have all the similar probs and take it to the Volvo Engineers? That would be good wouldn't it. Is there a portable instrument gauge that reveals the problem codes while driving? instead of sitting in a workshop?

Since I get my Volvo 850 1994 last 1998 I had that problem twice, first time was the fuel pump and second time was the fuel pump again together with the relay. Oh ! I had a third time and it was the camshaft possition sensor. The rest of the time it is running ok without problem.

Put the codes and check but let me tell you that the codes will not inform about the fuel pump. My experience says that the fuel pump last between two and two years and half appx.
