2001 Volvo S40 Turbo MAF Replaced Doesn't fix stalling
2001 Volvo S40 Turbo MAF Replaced Doesn't fix stalling
I brought my volvo to my mechanic, said the MAF needed replacing. Car will stall, rpms fall below 1000 when stopped. Need to give the car gas when starting, seems to run smoothly when foot on gas but as soon as you let up it stalls. He replaced the MAF, but this did not help. Said the code is still there, may be electrical problem and I should take to the dealer. Don't want to do that, any ideas? Thanks for any help. Beth

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
To complete the repair the code must be erased. Does your mechanic have a code reader?

Then it is possible the MAF wasn't the problem. Did he tell you what the code number was or can you find out?

He said it was the MAF code. He didn't say what number. I spoke to him and I am taking it to the local Volvo dealership. He said it is easy for them to swap out electronic parts. I will let you know what they say. Thanks for your help. Hopefully it won't cost me a fortune. Beth

I'm gonna take a guess here. From what you describe sounds like your idle air control slide has failed. This is what controls then engine when your foot is off the pedal, which sounds right because you say it runs fine when you are on the gas. Part number is 8670419 and the gasket is 9470027. Please re-post what the problem was when you get it figured out!
I got word today that the idle air control is stuck and the fuel pressure regulator was leaking. They are going to clean the throttle body while they have it apart and replace those parts. They think that should fix it. One good thing, they found out the catalytic converter has a crack and is under warranty - free fix. yay!!! I will keep you posted when I get it back. Thanks for your help. Beth
It is fixed, and they replaced the catalytic converter and replaced a part for the climate control that was part of a recall! All done for $700.00 plus tax. Picking the car up tonight. Thanks I will keep this in my favorites! Beth
I had a very similar sounding problem and it was my rear booster sensor. If you still have problems (let's hope you don't) you can always ask to have that checked. There are front and rear booster sensors, fyi.
