Just want to add that I drove off from my brother's and my 98 t-5 (205K miles) died 3 miles latter. Weather conditions were moist. Got towed back to his house. Found a popped intake cam seal on the distributor side. Oil and moisture in the distributor. Not very much either. Just pushed the seal back in to the head. Dried everything and got the car to start and run. Drove 350 miles home without difficulty. Good Luck.

Great suggestion as well. I had planned to remove the distributor cap and have a look in there even if I can get the car running as I want to know the baseline condition of parts.

Well, time to update after my visit today. I had no idea what I would be looking at or what issues I would find.

Turns out the very nice owner had bought the car for his daughter on a recommendation from a friend who runs a P80 NA wagon. Not sure if it is an 850 or V70 as it was too far away and only seen from the back.

Anyway the guy unfortunately overpaid for the car as it has a lowish mileage and was owned by an old guy. That in my book, particularly up here unless it has a documented maintenance is usually a good reason to run. The paintwork on the car is poor and their is rust blisters on the front of the hood around the grille. The interior is not great and it looks like it has been sitting under trees for a while. as the wiper cover is covered in slimy leaves. Other noticeables are the wrong wiper arm on the passenger side. It looks like a driver's side one as it catches the hood.

Turns out the car has been sitting for over 3 months as it was apparently running fine when bought but the day after it would stumble and run rough then die. His mechanic friend had changed the fuel pump and filter but no better. They had checked the PCV and it needs done very soon as there is oil everywhere. I have recommended they don't drive it until that is fixed so as not to blow the oil seals.

The battery was flat having sat for a few weeks so we jump started the car and it ran a bit rough so we stopped it and while we chatted about the car I swapped the fuel reply with a spare I brought. We restarted the car and it ran a bit rough initially and then really smooth and quiet. We left it idling for about 30 minutes until it was warm. The muffler stopped smoking when the engine was warm as a lot of condensation burned off.

Once warm the cooling fan kicked in and the temp gauge sat right in the middle.

Owner is delighted as people he had spoken to had no idea what the issue was. I told him I have good back up on here!!

We have now arranged for him to bring the car up to my garage when he gets back in a couple of weeks and we will go over the car with a fine toothcomb and make a list of maintenance repair plan.

Thanks guys for your help!

Neil.

I take my inspiration from our great friend Robert (rspi). I do this on a much smaller scale than he does, but it is great for mental wellness!

Now on to the S60 that won't run!
