I looked on the underside and the barbs look fairly permanent. Do they break off when you force it upwards? The whole thing looks like ti will rip off the top of the dash before it will come loose! I will put it aside for now and concentrate on getting the car running. I can return to this this winter when it goes into hibernation again.

That was exactly what I thought. There was no way those barbs were coming out without something breaking!

Many thanks for the info. That project can wait for now. Old dash pad will get returned for now and this will be a winter project.

Not to flex but i've removed a few of them without breaking the tabs

It is a bit scary the first time, but it you dont push the cover sideways it's fine. Worse case, a bit of epoxy will make them stronger than ever !

I had to replace the original speaker several
years ago. It failed like all of them do and a
chunk of the magnet was rolling around in
the speaker cone. Swapped it with the new
version with no grill damage.

IIRC, I got under the frame of the grill with a
bone tool and just worked my way around.

If the tabs break the cover can be held down with some Velcro. Two tabs on each side

We lost our old dog today. To distract myself I decided to have another look and if it broke it broke. The issue I found was that the outer cover actually sits lower than the plastic plate that holds it in place. You have to start at the front and as someone suggested a bone tool
(or 2 ideally I found) allowed me to get up under the edge and on top of the holding plate. Even though it was cracked the RF pin suddenly popped loose, I then managed to do the same on the FL. Then working around the edge with both tools the rear 2 also popped loose.

That was when I found the lemon I have been sold is worse that I thought. I will add pictures with the details later.
