I understand, though like I said, I might need a new valve body OR new transmission. It really depends on what has broken and if my clutch packs are worn.

There is also one other question I am very eager to know the answer to. What happens if Semi-synthetic and Synthetic fluids are mixed. I was running a mix of Mobil, Ravenol and Aisin Warner.

I’ve been running Mobil 3309 in my 2003 V70 for the last 100,000+ miles with absolutely no ill effects. No other additives. Currently have just over 250,000 miles on the car and it still shifts like new. (Keeping my fingers crossed)

vtl, did you have problems with Mobil 3309? It says here that it contains the friction modifiers. My transmission has no problems, and I'm just doing a drain and refill since the fluid is dark. Im not sure whether to get the mobil or volvo fluid.

It was shifting like crap in winters.

Was that because your transmission had problems, or the fluid? I live in the magical land of California with 100-degree summers and 10-degree snowy winters, so I'll probably end up getting the Volvo fluid.

I think, fluid. Valve body has been replaced with Sonnax, it worked fine after drain&fill with Volvo fluid.

Also I put in a rebuilt transmission with a brand new valve body, I had shift concerns with Toyota T-IV, which is very similar to Mobil 3309. No problems with Volvo fluid.

On the topic, how do we do a full flush? Drain from drain plug as much as we can, then can we start the car and drain again, or maybe drain again via the cooler return line?

I have very contaminated oil with coolant, I already did almost 5 liters of fresh fluid, but it's not really clearing up. I have 6 more liters and would like to really get the old fluid out. I mean, the gearbox could be dead, there was black sludge on the drain plug(sludge, paste whatever you want to call it). It was a hefty amount. It could be dead, but worth a try to really clean it up.

This is why I went with Mannol JWS3309 and if the gearbox actually comes back to life, I could probably try some Volvo fluid for the modifiers.

It can't be fully cleaned without taking it all apart.

How does coolant get in the transmission? Im not sure about transmissions, but my engine survived having a bunch of coolant in the oil. This link may help for flushing: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/new-m ... -pictures/. Maybe you could try flushing multiple times with cheap fluid.

Jesus christ, really? So it's forever contaminated?

@02V70

It enters via the integrated oil cooler in the engine radiator.
