Considering all of your rust, what was the condition of the original cross nuts? Did you reuse yours?

I am planning to replace three full spring suspensions but only bought cross nuts for one. Input from forums and elsewhere suggested that the original cross nuts would be fine to reuse.
Most of the struts I've taken apart there was minimal rust - if any. The bigger issue was getting them off if they were un-godly stuck, and brute force was needed. A couple got pretty chewed up. One thing I've noticed is several of them didn't have the washer (9) which helps the cross nut stand proud, giving a bit better angle to wrench it.

The cross nuts were in decent shape, but I chose to buy new ones just in case the old (I'm guessing original) ones were not re-useable. That way I wouldn't be stuck waiting for new replacements; as I have to order everything online.
If you're able to enlarge the picture below, the cross nut is visible. This is off my '98 V70 T5 with almost 150,000 miles, originally from the Boston area (where road salt is heavily used in the winter???).

I may have to take the car to a local repair shop to have the strut mounting nut torqued.

The struts/shocks themselves were/are Sachs and there were no washers (number 9 in diagram) below the cross nut. Hopefully the lack thereof does not create any issues. But, yes I can see how the washer would create a little added space to tighten the cross cut.

Grab that top bit with a good vice grip and torque those down Kally. It’s a non critical torque

Value is …..

That washer may have been a later production change; I don't recall seeing it on any of the stock OEM struts I've taken apart recently.
As mentioned earlier - and reinforced by the good Doctor - I hold the strut shaft with a good size crescent wrench, and use a long handle box wrench on the nut. Position the two so they're fairly close together so the effort goes into squeezing the handles towards each other; good-n-tight is good enough.

Ok, just one question: can the strut mounting nut be torqued after the strut assembly has been re-installed in the car?
